Post subject:  Boltrope bunching up against mast when lowering mainsail

Hi there, I'm a new Hobie 21sc owner and took the boat for first sail yesterday. Fabulous boat but I am having a problem with the boltrope bunching up against the mast as I lower the main which makes the boom crank handle too hard to continue rotating the boom. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I did try raising and lowering the height of the boom while rolling with little difference. Much appreciated.

May be the topping lift line is too long? You are attaching it to the aft end of the boom?

Yes the topping lift is attached to the outer end of the boom. Is there a standard length for the topping lift? I wondered if disconnecting the tack when lowering the mainsail might allow more room to pull the sail away from the mast?

It should hang the boom parallel to the battens. Is it a stock sail or was the sail after market? I don't have the specification for length. Maybe trial and error using another line to adjust the length

OK thanks for the tip regarding boom height parallel to battens. The sail appears to be whirlwind brand. Looks like a laminate sail of sorts with flat top head.

The sail would be the issue. Non-stock cut is not optimal for furling I would guess.

OK that makes sense then, thanks for the help with that.
