Tempe Town Lake, the closest place for me to paddle or sail.
Also the first place I ever kayaked and the place I took the maiden voyage with my AI!
It's not all you could ever want, but it is more than the dusty dry river bottom it used to be!
Now with the dam bursting, I'm driving further. Here's a little more about urban paddling in the desert:

Replacement bladders are on the way!

I'll tell you this, I want an extension on my permit!!

I was hoping to maiden my Adventure there last month. I bought my annual permit a couple days before the dam burst. Since I didn't even stick it on the boat yet, they gave me a refund. In in the meantime, I'll be at Saguaro or Canyon. Since I'm on their mailing list, they sent me this a couple weeks ago:

“Dear Tempe Town Lake boat permit holder,
As you may know, on July 20 there was a breach in Tempe Town Lake's west
dam that caused the lake to drain into the Salt River bed. While the
lake may be dry now, it is expected to be restored to operating
condition and available to boaters in November 2010.
As a current boat permit holder, we know you will lose time on your
permit due to these circumstances. To compensate for your loss, you will
be given a credit for the time it takes for the dams to be repaired. For
example, if your permit expires in August 2010 and the Tempe Town Lake
dam repairs take four (4) months to be completed, you will be given a
four (4) month credit on your renewal. This means your next renewal
would be in December 2011. This will apply to all permit renewals, as
long as they expire after June 2010 through June 2011.
Since we do not have a definitive date for the reopening of Tempe Town
Lake, we will be temporarily suspending boat permit renewals and sales.
As the repairs progress, we will provide you with updates; including the
date when renewals and sales will be available for purchase.
We appreciate your understanding and look forward to seeing you back on
the water.
Please contact the front desk at 480-350-8625 with any questions or
concerns you may have or visit our website
http://www.tempe.gov/lake/boating/boatpermits.htm for additional
information and updates.”

dregsfan, Thanks for the update! Either Saguaro or Canyon Lake should be much nicer! I just liked having it so close during the week... Let me know if you want someone to go with!
