Howdy! Well, our NW Wyoming lakes are frozen over til June. Meanwhile, I'm dreaming and planning a mid-June vacation to Puget Sound/Orcas Island/Doe Bay resort. I love my Garmin GPS Foretrex 101 and the way its velcro wrist band easily attaches to the front aka brace bar. HOWEVER, it makes sense to have something with old school dependability (ie relying on magnets). What are your recommendations? Portable units that sit on top of the front hatch cover seem a good idea, except that the mast is between me and the unit. Also, it might make best sense to have something permanently in place. What if I want to strap a day bag there instead? Has anybody had success with compasses mounted in the cockpit or on the crossbar? LED's illuminating the display are a plus. JPG's and links will be greatly appreciated. Give me your biases and I'll invent new ones of my own. Happy Trails! Chris |

I use the Ritchie Sport DashMount X-21BB mounted in the fwd cockpit wall. Great compass. I use it all the time even with GPS which you can easily lose it's advantage when the batteries go sooner than you expected.(Did you see the Survivorman when that happened to him and his hunting pard?) You can also wire the Ritchie to your 12v battery supply for night ops. Mounted on the wall it's out of the way for transport, doesn't have to be moved, very hard to steal for all but the thief that wants to strip your boat . |

I have dug out and now use my 35 year old diver's compass that is built to last every hazard and is worn on the wrist such as the Fortrex 101. Works great and is always where you need it. I am guessing they are still readily available through dive shops. I am going to buy a back-up Garmin Fortrex 201 shortly though for all the other stuff a GPS can do for us..Pirate |

Howdy! The Iris seems perfect, but I'd rather have it flush with the hull and not removable. The Ritchie Sport DashMount X-21BB mounted in the fwd cockpit wall seems to best fit my fantasy, but I have to ask KayakBob: What is your 12 volt battery setup, how do you secure it, is it hooked to a bilge pump, what and where are your switches? JPG's are appreciated as I muse about this in Wyoming's waist deep snow as you sail off Hawaii Happy Trails! Chris |

Howdy! Nobody out her ice boats. The snow is too friggin' deep from start to end of winter. Skiing here is a pathway to God. MRL asked Quote: If the lakes are frozen how's the ice boating up there?
