I'm going to mount a tablet/Ipad on the TI with Railblaza/Ram mounts, for navigation, charts, speed, distance, etc.

Anyone else who have tried that? Do you have any thoughts? Anything I haven't thought of?

Disadvantages:
It doesn't take a beating, and it sinks -Sure, I'll be gentle with it. And maybe tie a line to it.
Battery life - I haven't tried a tablet yet, but i think I will have enough battery life. And easy to charge with powerbank. Won't use the internet, only GPS.
Water - Buying a watertight cover (man, those are expenisve!).

Advantages:
Pretty cheap, and easy to mount.
Can dismount it and use it f.ex. in the tent.
I'll have a tablet for home use  , if I get one.
I don't have to install a large battery in the boat.

Wouldn't you just rather use a Chart Plotter? Then you could add a depth/fish finder and underwater sonar to everything you mentioned.

I don't need the fish finder / sonar.
The TI/AI's with a chart plotter look awesome, though.
I would have to install a battery for it ( I think).

The problem with tablets is being able to see what’s on the screen out in bright sunlight.
An iPad has a brightness of 600 nits while most chartplotters are 1000-1500 nits.
I’ve tried both on the water and chartplotters are much easier to see in bright sunlight. In certain conditions its impossible to see the screen on a tablet. You would need to provide a shading visor.

The sonar provides a lot of entertainment on those long, slow sails and a depth finder is always great to have.

They sell external batteries for Chart Plotters, here's one Hobie sells. I just use a small, fully sealed 12VDC lead-acid battery but even that's old fashioned. There are lithium batteries now much smaller and lighter. Neither is difficult to hook up on the TI.
