Has anyone tried this with their Hobie Island? Could removing the lower (stern) drain plug and adding a non-return valve to a tube attached inboard of the threaded hole create a venturi effect similar to what Andersen automatic bailers in sailing dinghies benefit from? |

The inline one-way valves typically used between a bilge pump and the hull fitting require pressure from the pump to open. That type would probably not work in an auto-siphon mode with just weak vacuum pressure. I am not real familiar with the Anderson Bailer but it does not appear to be inline and instead requires a hull bottom mount. Both the inline valves and the Anderson Bailer are susceptible to sticking in the open position from wear or debris which could be disastrous. Personally, I would rather have a manual or electric bilge pump with above-waterline discharge and keep everything below the waterline securely sealed. Peter |
