Post subject:  Update-Small Sail Adapter for 08 AI
This is an 08 update to Roadrunner’s excellent small sail adapter for the AI found here:

It details one way to allow the small sail to be fitted to the 08 AI when in Adventure mode.
This is a brief ‘how to’ as the above posts have more detailed explanations and should be referenced before proceeding.

The 08 AI mast fitting –note the pin in the base and the new style release clip.

The Hobie parts needed are the same:
84550001 mirage kayak mast tube receiver base
79512 mast collar.

The 08 AI mast base which now has a hole instead of a pin is not needed using this method as the mast tube receiver fits over the newer pin type base found in the 08 AI’s. The 08 mast base would make it easier to fit (you have to align the small mast tube end over the pin) but increases the complexity.

(I couldn’t find a part number for the 08 mast base- can you help out here Matt?)

The other parts needed were purchased from my local plumbing supply shop.
The parts marked ? are bits of a pressure coupler that I already had. Apologies as I’m not sure of the correct part name.

Fit the parts over the mast tube receiver like so:

The 25mm reducer holes need very slight enlarging so that they fit over the mast tube. I used a small file. The ½â€

Very nice work, Stringy. I changed the old site to include your update. Everyone seems to be pretty quiet on this topic, but at least if they get an inspiration to use the small sail with the AI, they know how to make it happen!

Have you tried yours out yet? I was using mine the other day and it was great -- I would sail along until an eligible boat wake came my way, roll the sail up while chasing the wake, then pop the sail back out to continue sailing. Of course you can do this with the AI if you have wind to begin with. But on a windless day, it's nice to go kayaking with the sail stowed in case some wind shows up while you're out. 8)

Thanks Roadrunner. Your original adapter idea made me realise that with it the AI was probably the best value, most versatile kayak around! :)
As great as the AI is, for shorter trips such as my commute, I would rather have the Adventure with the small sail. I've only tried the adapter twice but I'm surprised at how well it sails - it is much faster than my tandem and with the daggerboard a great performer into the wind. You are right about the improved sheeting angle too. I've noticed the better sail shape using the AI mainsheet over what I was used to on the Tandem 8)

It still doesnt look straightforward.
What is a, "Pressure Coupler", and how do I get sawn-off bits of one?
If you are still using it without glue what is holding it all together?

Unfortunately all my tools were stolen from my old house during the move to my new one, i dont even have a drill or a vice anymore.
The PVC reducers look like they have been cut with a drop-saw which I dont have.

All of the parts I got from Bunnings. They are all stock standard and have not been cut, apart from the black irrigation fittings which were cut with a hacksaw, drilled and filed to fit. The pressure coupler is no longer stocked by Bunnings which is why I don't know its correct name. It is a standard plumbing part that any half decent plumbers supply should recognise. The reducers are still stocked by Bunnings and only need to be filed lightly to fit the mast tube.
Its the tight fit of the parts that hold it all together.
