I've used the new AI tramps with my wife as a passenger about a half dozen times and I love having her next to me when we're out on the water. Something I noticed is if she is on the leeward trampoline the rudder can be very difficult to control. Sometimes it renders the rudder completely ineffective. It's our typical AI rudder problem magnified tenfold. However if she moves over to the windward tramp the problem goes away and I feel a performance improvement. I realize when an ama is digging into the water it acts like a rudder to turn the boat. But it can screw up the already so-so AI rudder performance. My big wish is for the new models of the AI have a re-engineered rudder. If not, I need to figure out how to build a simple tiller/rudder for my AI. Plus I'm getting weary of constantly working that thumb drive. I'm not complaining ... just hoping ... wishing ..... |

The tramps are not really meant for passengers. That`s not to say they are not valuable. |

Aledal, you completely missed the point. Irregardless of passenger or not, I'm saying if you put weight on the tramps (in my case around 105 pounds) then the already marginal AI rudders can be rendered almost useless under certain conditions. |

Yeah-I agree. I always felt the rudder was too small for such a large sail and boat. I wrote a post about that too. |

FloridaRobot How much do you weigh yourself ? My guess is that the rudder must be sized for the maximum weight of the AI (300lbs I guess) so if you + 105, especially if away from the center of gravity, exceed that limit, then one can understand the strange behavior

I`ve always felt the original twist and stow rudder was designed for the Adventure. When it became the Adventure Island they probably knew it needed a larger rudder but could not accommodate one with the twist and stow design. Just a guess. The boat may be rated to 350 lbs but Im not surprised to hear it doesnt handle well with 105lbs on the tramp. I dont think a dog would matter much though. |

Arno I weigh around 200 so we're within the 350 pound (or 300???) recommended weight. When my wife sat behind me (back to back) in a seat I made for her, the occasional rudder problems weren't much different than when I went out alone. It's when the weight moves onto the leeward tramp that puts added stress on the rudder. At least that's what it seemed like the last couple trips. |

FloridaRobot Thanks for feedback with passengers on tramps. Yes, tramps may not be designed with passengers in mind shouldn't keep you from using them that way if you are still under 350lb total weight load. It certainly does open up new uses for the boat. Have you tried to see if using the daggar board helps the rudder issue any? |

I played with the daggerboard yak and even tried the pedals in the down position as an added daggerboard. I usually play around with every option I can think of when the rudder starts getting stressed. |

Most of the time (not always) if I reef the sail just another 2" or so, the rudder control comes back. Of course, when the waves get big, all bets are off.  Kayaking Bob |

When the waves get big you need to counter balance and lean into them All bets are not off. And when the surf boarders go out? We are safer than they are. Stay out. Grab on to something & "furl the sail" if that`s the right terminology(sp)or reef it.Whatever. When in doubt-stay out

OK then, sorry for the mistake, I was quoting 300 from (bad) memory ! I too find that the right amount of sail furl has a noticeable influence on rudder control. And I think there is a point where one can feel too much stress in the rudder pin, when the rudder handle starts to move with some force by itself (in fact under the combined forces of the sail and the incoming waves). |
