Hello Hobie AI'ers - I've sailed various types of sail boats, including Hobie cats. - The AI is unique in its sailing abilities because of being able to pedal while sailing. This enables the AI to go directly into irons, to come-about easily, to move sans wind, all with minimum energy expenditure. - I submit that pedal sailing is a new type of sailing. What's your take? ------------- Al K |

I agree! I have posted on here before with my view that the Mirage Drive creates a whole new kind of boating. Maybe any boat which uses the Mirage Drive should be called a Hobie Scoot - it kind of describes the thing, and resonates quite nicely with the universally-recognised Hobie Cat. The system definitely warrants its own unique 'brand identity', IMHO Ditch |

Yesterday in a flurry to get out from a boat launch into a stiff wind I put the mirage drive in wrong way around. Took me a moment to figure out why I kept going back to the launch so quickly despite pedaling so vigorously. D'oh! So, we can add going in reverse to the unique possibilities of pedal sailing. |

I've stopped carrying a paddle. The dagger board or hands serve okay as a paddle for maneuvering while docking. -- Al K |

Totally agree. I went for a blap across the lake on the weekend. Found a secluded sand island and had lunch. Only used the sail on the way over, with the drive in the rear boot just in case. Once I got there though, the wind died off a bit. After lunch, I was gett'n cold, the sun was going down and I could smell the baked dinner in the oven, so by using the sail and drive on the way home, the A1 was motoring. Yet another great day. ( Gotta get you some pictures ) |
