Do you have standard nylon sheer bolts holding those Akas out? Makes you wonder what sort of winds others have been in when they sheered their bolts as those Amas are completely under water. Regardless of "could have gone faster with a furled sail", looks like a buz

I have a standard nylon bolts, but I think this line of sprayskirts also helping me.  My Amas are constantly under water

I think you're right about the spray skirts. Do you ever pull into floating pontoons and have to fold the amas in to get alongside. That has put me off the spray skirts as I do that often in South Australia. Too many good places for drinks I mean lunch. But I guess I could have a pulley at the front and run a line back to cleats on the aka to the left of the mast. Changeman: I took a little different tact on my spray skirts and have had pretty good luck with them. I re-enforced my tramps and made my spray skirts all strong enough so I can walk on them if needed. At the same time I added a small piece of spectra string to my AMA bungys so when we are diving and snorkeling we can climb onto the boat via the AMA's. Actually when we are offshore anchored people like to so on the AMA's just to hang out. I have also had people sit on my spray skirts to put their fins and masks on before going in the water (pretty cool). It always seems to work out we always have too many people and gear so being able to store mirage drives, snorkel bags, and light gear up on the spray skirts has came in very handy for us. To get the strength I needed I simply ran a 1/4 inch nylon line from the bow to a clip on the center metal cleat on the AMA. This line is double duty in that it serves as the outer line of the spray skirt and also re-enforces the AMA's so the can't fold if the nylon sheer bolt breaks, and also prevents the AMA bars from popping out. With a little tension on it the line also prevents the AMA's from rattling around (which drives me nuts). Actually the coolest feature of my setup is the ease of setup, I pull up to the launch with my trailer unfold the AMA's then click in just that one clip to the metal pad eye on the AMA and I'm ready to go. When done I pull the boat on the trailer, lay all my sails down on the hull (with all the rigging and control lines still attached) then just drape the spray skirts over the bow and clip them in place. They block the wind nicely on the highway and keep all my sails and rigging nicely contained. As a side note I just recently began storing my AMA's on top of the boat when storing in the garage and traveling down the highway. The fronts of the AMA's are folded under my spray skirts, and the backs of the AMA's are strapped to the center of my motor mount/anchor line reel. This gives me much better gas mileage, prevents the AMA's from scuffing the side of the boat, and protects all my sails and gear from the sun and wind, plus it takes up much less room in the garage, so we now have room for all the motor cycles and scooters as well as my roadster (lol). Who ever thought you could get so much from a pair of simple spray skirts. Bob |

Thanks for the info, sounds like a great set up. It should work with mine although I load my car top with the amas attached. Just the exceptions you have mentioned before. I'll have a look at some of your previous photos to make sure I understand your setup. Cheers, Brian |
