I noticed that many of the Cat sailors on this forum named there boats... Have any of the AI Sailors named there boats? Did you Christen it when you got it? Do you mind sharing the name and story? I just think its interesting and was starting to think of a name for mine when I get it this spring. (starting early I know) I want to have good luck and appease the Sailing gods.

My first Hobie 16 was named X-Plorer, because I used it to sail on lakes in N MN which are usually only used by small fishing boats (I liked 'gunkholing' with camping gear lashed to the tramp in waterproof bags) The next cat I had was an 18' Nacra painted with black Imron paint... called it the "Black Sheep"... fastest sailing craft I have ever owned My 26' sailboat was named after the Norse god 'Loki' Because the hulls were large enough...I had vinyl lettering applied with the name. I am not sure if there would be enough room to put lettering on the amas? Has anyone put a name on the amas? My preference for naming is a 'name' rather than some kind of pun, which I find a lot of larger boat owners use. |

I come from a sea kayak background. Sea kayakers never name their boats--don't ask me why. It may be that they think it is too pretentious. Sea kayaks are simple, functional boats. But, hey, it is your boat, do as you please. Keith |

i named my Hobie AI I TRI as you can see it is a pun or play on words and reminds me also of the Will Smith movie I ROBOT. It is also my user name for this forum. I race socially against other craft at my lake and it is a requirement to have a sail number or boat name to distinguish the craft, so thats another reason for picking I TRI as the 8 inch vinyl letters fit easily across the bow. |

We have two Hobies, an AI and a tandem Outfitter. After seeing how I excessively rigged my AI (GPS, Fishfinder, rod holders etc.) my son named it the Pimp Yak. In retaliation, I named the gold tandem that he uses "The Short Bus" |

Great stories so far Keep them coming. I did not mean for this to only apply to AI owners but to all Hobie owners. It is thought that tradition is to name all sailing and power vessels but If your Yak is your vessel of choice then chances are there is a name and a story behind it |

I haven't put the name on the boat yet, but she's called "Chip Shape". The shape & yellow color of the hull are somewhat similar to a potato chip, and with a last name of Lay, it just made sense. I wasn't nearly as creative with my old Hobie 14 though. Bananas. - Jim L |

My Wife and I just got back from a vacation in Virginia Beach where I pick up a Hobie Lanai that I used in the surf. The waves were ruff and the air was cool during our week so my wife watched from the beach as I attempted to ride the surf in my new kayak. After each ride she would comment about a new cut or bump that I had received. I would just smile and leave her on the beach as I went back out for more with the kayak. This lead to me to name the Lanai "The Mistress" As I told my wife, "The Lanai is a cruel mistress, but I keep going back." BTW - We both have AIs but have yet to name them |

Now that I own one and Have christened her with the Bubbly wine. I can answer my Own thread. I have named her "LEELOO" after my favorite Redhead from "The Fifth Element" Milla Jovovich. |

Not a AI, a Revo. But in homage to my Wife, Maggie, whose alter ego drinking personality is Maggie-Mae. Look out when you see Maggie-Mae come round...run for your life is more like it. So in a little word play, my boat is christened maggie mae i? |

I was 12 when I went sailing for the first time in 1970 at Cedar Beach Long Island in a 24ft Venture with my uncle Al... aunt Alice... and cousin Alice. They named the boat "Aledal". My uncle joked it worked backwards too-"Ladela". They have long since passed on but I still sail out of the same harbor. Listening to the same music. The boats a little smaller though! Jeff |

My boat is brand spanker as of last Sunday but I bought her after she was being demonstrated by the Hobie Dealer Peter Manley of Canberra, who is incidentally a great bloke. Anyway we contacted him before we rode our motocycles to a weekend in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. He agreed to bring it the 2 hour trip down to a alpine resort town called Gindabyne and sail it for us on Lake Gindabyne. Loved it so much that I bought one and so did my mate. Anyway I have been thinking of names and because of where I first saw her, 'Gindabyne Gal' is appropriate. I do cut signs so her name will go on this week if I get the time. Where do you think is the best place for a name to be placed on the Island?....Pirate |

Thanks Chris for bringing it to my attention. Actually I have already cut and mounted the name. After reading your post and re-reading mine, I fast tracked out to the boat and checked and to my relief I spelt it correctly with a 'J'. I must have been having blonde moment when I wrote the above post. Looking forward to a sail on the Gippsland Lakes tomorrow. Forecast is for 15 to 20k s/e so should be a fun ride...Pirate |
