This is a live test of SPOT satellite messenger. At about 8:45 AM, Eastern Daylight Savings Time, (-4 hrs from GMT), I will activate my SPOT and put it in the “trackingâ€

Spot is neat. Right now I'm also watching some friends go from Nassau to the Exumas.

It may turn out to be personally very relevant later this year - time, planning and fate will all play a part. :wink:

I have the SPOT in a similar dry bag sold by West Marine--frankly, I don't like it since it does not seem to seal as well, but it is what I have now.

Here is a picture of my SPOT and GPS. There have been occasional comments that a GPS interfers w/ SPOT. Previously, I thought that when my GPS was starting up, that SPOT had trouble getting a GPS fix. Once both were operational, there was no interference.

I see you're still using your sea kayak, Keith. Is it for pragmatic reasons or just love of paddling?

Good questions, Chris. I love to paddle my sea kayak and used to put in 500 miles/yr. The first year I had my AI I think I did about 20 mi, all in one trip.

This year at least I did my "annual" Flamingo to Chokoloskee paddle trip of 70 mi. I would have done it a second time in my AI, but my buddy Polecat is laid up this year and no one else volunteered to join me. Also, I got busy doing other things.

With regards to using my kayak for this SPOT test, it was sort of a no-brainer. The sea kayak weighs 50# and has only one piece of equipment--a paddle. Also, the narrow, mangrove-lined tidal creek could have been a problem for the pedal drive of the Adventure. This is the creek,

My sea kayak is 19 ft long but I am very comfortable manuevering it here.

Hey, that looks just like my neck of the woods. I agree, I'd rather paddle in those conditions, although I'm sure Roadrunner would beg to differ.

Brings back great memories of playing around in those little creeks as a kid, Keith. We lived on the Gables waterway. On a high enough tide, I used to take my 15 Whaler all around back there and through to the Bay.

Glad you both are enjoying the adventures of Pelican. Being in boat sales, I encounter plenty of people who have an unrealistic dream of selling everything, casting off, and sailing the seas. Chris and his family are among very few who actually do it. It's unbelievably frustrating, expensive, and rewarding. Watching a newbie methodically get into sailing and pursue that goal has been interesting. To get the back story, see all the posts by "Labatt" in the Precision forum on trailer sailor. It's also fun to watch newbies discover places and things in the Bahamas that are familiar to me, seeing them through new eyes.
