Post subject:  Best Sailing movies?
I take back everything bad I`ve ever said about the Adventure Island. Easter Sunday I went out of Cedar Beach, Long Island N.Y. with 4 ft swells & winds N-NW gusting to twenty something mph.38 degrees F. Had a survival suit on. Was out for 4 hours-this boat blew me and mother nature away.

Howzit Aledal,
Great to hear about another happy sailor on the Ai. Yes, I believe that they excel as the wind increases. Although I grew up on LI, I can't remember where Cedar Beach is. North or south shore? I was raised in Long Beach and spent many summer days crossing Reynolds channel both by small skiff and swimming to the marshes in Island Park and throughout the West End . Never had such great toys back then, but a circumnavigation of the Island would be a great summer run! Been in Hawaii for 35 years now and rarely get back. Still have many relatives all over the LI area. Enjoy your soon to be summer sailing.

The best sailing movie ever is "the world in his arms" with Gregory Peck as "the boston man," and Anthony Quinn, "the greek" where they race their schooners to Alaska.

Master & Commander was also great.

I recently watched Deep Water and found it a compelling documentary all about the first solo non-stop around the world sailing race that was held back in 1963.

If you're not aware of the circumstances of the race (I wasn't) I think you'll find it a remarkable tale. :shock:
Interestingly, a documentary was screened here last week about the tragic death of Andrew McCauley the Aussie solo kayaker who died trying to paddle to New Zealand in his sea kayak. I thought there were some interesting parallels in both stories.

I thought I would move this back to your original movie thread! :wink:
I liked M&C but I'm not a big Rusty Crowe fan. The Horatio Hornblower TV series set in the same period was better IMHO.

The complete set is a great collection of rollicking good yarns! :wink:
After your recommendation I saw some youtube clips of Wind and liked what I saw enough to want to watch it. The reviewers agree with you about the plot but all raved about the sailing footage. Unfortunately it is not available anywhere in OZ-not at the video shops, dvd retailers or even eBay. :? (probably because of the plot?)
I managed to order it from Amazon in the US. :)

Ah hah! So its a personal thing with your fellow Aussie Captain Aubrey eh Captain? :wink: . Truthfully? I love his acting but dont think Id like him in person. Same with Paul Hogan. I think I`d like Nicole Kidman no matter what though. Even if she were really mean to me :shock: ). Thanks for the tip on "Horatio Hornblower"( I thought you were joking at first)- and I`ll be purchasing the series if available in the U.S.-Possibly the second movie as well.
I got "Wind" and "Deep Waters" on Amazon.

Back when I was an Admiral I could have relieved him of his command, or sent him into a battle he couldn't possibly win! :wink:
Now I'm just an Old Salt mutiny would be my only option. :(
