Post subject: | Rudder/Sail Mast Maintenance |
Hi guys, I was wondering if there was any recommended rudder maintenance? Should I put some WD-40 on the various hinges and twisting pieces that make up the rudder. I have had my boat a little over a year and want to make sure I don't break the rudder when a little oil or grease might have helped. What about the mast post and beads in the and the furling parts, do they need any oil or lube? JG |

I have lubricated all the moving parts on mine. If you are sailing anywhere near sand, do not use anything that leaves a sticky residue, the sand will stick to it and become a grinding paste. I use Mclube Sailkote. Works well. http://www.purplemarine.com/Product.asp ... Code=ML-00 This stuff can be used on pretty much anything, including sails etc. |

I started using 303 on the sails, after the clear areas on my oldest one starting cracking. Most places, a spray and wipe down once a year would do great. Here in Hawaii, maybe 3-4x a year depending on usage. |

IMO "Lanox" is a superior lube to WD40 for the AI as it does not dry out to a flakey laquer like WD40. I only use it on the metal parts such as the AMA Pins and Mirage chain, Bolts, etc as I am in sandy areas all the time. 303 will prevent stains from getting into the weave of the sail and make it easier to clean. Don't us Outdoor Plastic Furniture Cleaner on your Hull, it usually contains Ammonia, suds and brush followed by Hobie protectant. |
