A lot of people talk about this risk of capsize, and I've never felt like I had any authority on the subject, but after posting this video, it's safe to say that I use them, and I enjoy them. I have had absolutely no concerns with capsizing with these tramps. I understand the fear, but I tend to sit up on them whenever the winds are anything over gentle gusts. I suppose if you stay in the middle of the boat when you have the tramps on, there's slightly more risk, but I think with tramps on, you'll notice that you'll be up on them a lot more then you might think. You end up sailing the AI like a regular sailboat with your feet in the middle and your butt up on the tramps. If you do this, you've dramatically decreased your chances of capsizing.
For me, I really don't worry about capsizing at all. I feel MUCH safer with the tramps ON then without because I have the option to climb up on the tramp to keep the boat level.
As far as making your own, I suppose you could, but why? For me, the risk of capsize is so small, that to make tramps on your own, and not go with Hobie tramps, seems like a waste. Hobie's been making quality trampolines for decades, I'd rather know that I have that kind of experience making my trampolines.
To each his own, but I can tell you from my experience that once you have the tramps, you'll sail the boat differently, and you'll feel just as safe as you always have. If you don't like them, you can always wrap them up on the front ama even while you're underway. Then you're back to the same AI that you're used to.
