| Post subject: | TI BAGGAGE CAPACITY - INSIDE STOWAGE VOLUME ? |
Hi there I am thinking about changing my Kayak (stowage 150 liter = 34 gallon US, dry) for a TI. Now for a crew of 2 a stowage of 34 gallon gives us 5 self sufficient day's of costal cruising. My question beeing, and till now I found no answer, how much can I store inside the TI ? Thank's for your answer Dying Flutchmen Austria |

More of a weight problem than a space problem I think. 34 gallons * 8.35 lbs/gallon = 283 lbs 2 People @ 150 lbs/person = 300 lbs TI Max Weight is 600 lbs... That means that you would have 600-300-283 = 16 lbs left over for gear. I don't think the math works with that much water... |

Dying Flutchmen, You want to know what the internal volume of the TI is? I haven't seen any figures published on that. The good thing about the TI is that most of its volume can be used. The hatches are positioned so that all of the inside space can be reached. Remember though that if gear won't fit through the 8" hatch then it will have to through the front hatch. You will also lose a bit of volume due to the mast braces, drivewell moldings and flotation foam. |

DF, I would guess you can carry 150-200# of gear/supplies/water depending on the weight of your passengers. Volume-wise, the TI is very compariable to many tandem kayaks--it is not very long, but it is wide. If the TI is anything like the AI, you may take on significant water (1-3 gal) each day, so you have to keep things in a dry bag or box if they need protection. Careful attention must be paid to keeping the round hatch closures very clean w/ lubricated sealing ring. The front hatch is a good design and should not leak if the seals are working properly. DF, I can't help with internal volume... but Josh 'Yakass' Holmes has some excellent articles on his week-long camping expeditions at his website yakass.net. For example, Camping kit for a kayak expedition. Just search his website for 'Fraser Island' for some great trip reports too. I think you'll find them interesting. |

We've learned to not put much of anything in the three round ports due to the control cables being obstructed by gear movement in the heavy chop we seem to always encounter. The only place we store stuff now is in the bow hatch. |
