Weight distribution. I have found the few but enjoyable days out on my TI that sailing solo as a big guy has me in a quandry. I like the front better for solo most of the time as the controls are there and going upwind the boat points a bit higher.(as long as I don't stall the rudder) Off the wind or downwave,after making the boat nearly a new version of submarine , I quickly figured I better move back. That and taking a couple of reef turns got things back in control. This is me at 300# and 15# safety gear etc in front compartment and 2 litres of water in back. I do plan to carry more weight on extended camp cruises in the everglades. Any suggestions? I am thinking I have to load heavy in front and ride in back . Only exception would be real light winds or having to peddle thru long windless passes or channels. I expect my expedition gear weight to be about 40# and water a variable 70# or less. My experience going upwind and lightwinds from the back is a slower boat that slaps and pounds as the bow is way out of the water. |

There are a number of interesting threads on this forum that discuss weight distribution re the TI and AI: Where is the weather helm? Unbalanced AI Bottom line is that they are sensitive to weight distribution, so some attention to where you store gear will certainly help. |
