Hi,

I see there is a 2007 AI for sale and wanted to ask if I can upgrade the parts that have changed in 2010. I think the akas have changed and the rudder. Is that about it? Can I switch those out? Can I buy new akas and a new rudder and bolt them onto a 2007 chassis? Thanks.

Rich

You are talking about the 2011 model year crossbars, akas and rudder. While you can swap out the crossbars and akas (The hull is unchanged in this regard)... we do not yet offer these parts for sale. The larger rudder can not be used on an older-than 2011 model. The transom has changed.

Most of the upgrades could be done with the exception of the Click-n-go levers for holding the Miragedrive in place. The 07 had the camlocks and you cannot upgrade those. The rudder pull T-handles is an easy upgrade but the 07 had the pin in the mast that located into a hole in the mast receiver. It was changed to a pin in the receiver because the hole collected sand.
I'd be checking the cost of replacement parts before buying an 07 model. It would have to be very cheap for it to be worthwhile if you wanted to add the latest parts.
Knowing the improvements Hobie have made since the 07, especially regarding strengthening the drivewell I wouldn't be doing it.

I bought a 2006 used and regret it. I only saved $1,500 but I really got an inferior product. So I will probably sell the 06 and buy a 2011 model. That said, the AI is the most thrilling craft on the water I have found. I have four power boats including an Albin TE 28 and a Cal 35 sail boat and I much prefer the AI. I have upgraded to the mirage turbo drive and the larger rudder. When I tried the dealer's 2010 model I found it much superior to the 2006 but it was too late to change.
