Does everyone know about www.nearmap.com

Very limited in functions etc compared to Google Earth but much faster and 4 years ahead. In fact the photo over my house was taken last month.

It's worth a look.

Hi Slaughter, we are quite the opposite, last map 2004 and cannot even come close to seeing individual houses, where as Google Earth is 2007 and we can pick out our house. I am not Melbourne metro, out on the Morninton Peninsula but I would have thought populated enough to draw a little more attention.

For us, Not so happy :cry:

I've got no idea why that area is not covered. I check regularly as that was my old sailing ground. They seem to be expanding central Victoria but leave that little pocket uncovered.

Yes scattered 2010 scans from Frankston up to Mornington and from Queenscliffe across the R.I.P. to Portsea and then zilch-nad-nothing, not important. Where they have done it the quality is great but wish they would cover Western Port and around here (some shallow reefs I am looking for).

I tried to check nearmap out and it is too busy to let me on to the site.

We bought our house in 2008 and planted some fruit trees in the spring of 2009. When I go to Google Earth the new trees are in the picture.

Like Max I can see my TI in the yard as well. Much better detail for my area than Google Earth. :)

Sounds like it's something you will use all the time, or something you will never open again, depending upon where you live. For me, the clarity and speed is way better than GE but as I said before, the functions are limited.

No doubt they both have good quality, some areas better than others and Sydney seems to be better catered for than Melbourne and it's surrounding suburbs.
Google Earth if you zoom in on Shelly Beach Manly, you can see the scuba divers and swimmers in the water, brilliant. Same beach and area as the other divers with Nearmap, if you zoom in to the image taken 11 September 2010 not 16 September 2010 and you can see another diver but not as clear http://www.nearmap.com/[email protected],151.297083&ll=-33.800028,151.297083&z=22&t=k&nmd=20100911 (not sure if link will work).
Google Earth I also find it easier to use/share images and details with others but that could just be because I have used it more?

Nearmap say on their Wiki page that the Mornington Peninsula is planned to be done, just not sure when. They say they update at least once a year if not more for more popular areas with demand but it's been 6 years since they have covered this area. Just hope when they do do it, it's with very high resolution and they cover the shipping channels, Hovel pile, Chinamans hat, South channel fort/light etc, will make it easier to map/plan trips on the bay.

Couple of other interesting Nearmap shots "The HMAS Canberra" it was resently scuttled in 30 meters of water just outside the R.I.P. off Barwon Heads. This shot if you look carefully you can actually pick out its outline amongst the dive boats. http://www.nearmap.com/?ll=-38.299527,144.543482&z=17&t=k&nmd=20100104
And this one is the J3 class sub that was scuttled in its present condition off Swan Point near Queenscliff, where it was to act as a breakwater. It lies in 5-8m of water and is an interesting dive [url]

:( I have an old canon video that shot great footage in an Amphibico housing, but the only way I can transfer footage is by firewire and my old computer with firewire has turned its feet up and died, my new laptop cannot connect to the camera, technology, why does it out date. Hopfully I can work something out in the meantime :roll: .
