Now that I have your attention, the year is over and it's time to vote.

Before I go any further, I'd just like to say, and I'm sure we would all agree, there has been some pretty professional photos submitted for this competition which not only gives us all a bit of an extra interest, but it also gives us the chance to showcases and show off our little spot in the world.

If you view this thread, viewtopic.php?f=71&t=19685 choose your favorite 3 then come back to this thread to vote, that will make it a lot less messy. We can give 3 points for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. And if we don't attach photos but just simply vote, the thread won't clog up. I'm sure Hobie are busy organising the transport for the prize by either truck, boat or plane. This is big.

Here goes. I'll start the ball rolling.

1st - hollgi - 4AI's watching TV
2nd - Astro - heading out
3rd - Yakass - Rigged for kayak fishing expedition, Fraser isl

1. Stringy getting hammered by a wave. - Stringy
2. Det riding swell off Lion Island. - Cowsgomoo
3. Lake Powell AZ - Walt.

Kayaking Bob's shot of Scott needing to reef is a serious contender for the best all-time AI shot, but it's pre-2010.

Dammit, I forgot all about this one. I got some ripper pics at Fraser Isl 2010 that might have made the cut. Oh well... might sneak them into a 2011 edition perhaps.

In any case, some great photos submitted there guys. Luckily for us the AI is so photogenic!

I've only had mine less than a month, but am already noticing that the photos tend to look the same when taken from the boat. In my case, I am going to have to find some new angles if I don't want my blog filled up with photos of the same dog on the same tramp sail after sail.

I've looked at the photos once and have not made any decisions yet--other than they all look terrific. I tend to like the scenary ones where the AI/TIs are almost incidental.

Personally, I can't enter any photos because all of mine are touched up with Photoshop to make up for cheap cameras, bad light, and/or bad technique. That's life for me.

I don't think that should stop you Keith. Not so long ago, when professional photographers and hobbyists used to develop their own film, it was accepted that what happened in the darkroom was at least as important to the production of an image as the actual taking of the snapshot. The image is in the eye of the photographer. The camera is just a relatively crude tool for capturing light on an array of sensors. That's why photography is an art and why a talented photographer can take better pictures using an old box Brownie than most of us can take with top class equipment. I think many of the shots you have shared with us would have been more than worthy contenders.

Thanks for your comment, Chris. Very nice, and I agree w/ what you say. Nowadays, even professional photographers do a lot in the the digital dark room. The reason for my statement was, Slaughter, who makes the rules, said no photoshopping or something similar.

Good points Chris and Keith but I only started with a list of rules because there had to be a starting point somewhere. I'm quite happy for us to change some rules for 2011 to make it a bit different by allowing photoshop or similar. I'm a bit the same Keith, I tend to like the scenery shots as well, hense my selections. How could CGM's 'Det at Lion Island' have missed my cut? I have been procrestinating about it ever since.

We all make the rules so perhaps we want to also have a few other awards rather than just best photo. Prize value will still be the same  If we had 'Photographer of the Year', which would be all the points added up from their 3 shots, I would vote for Astro or Skymax. For 'Most Creative or Unique Photo of the Year' I would have chosen TxYakMan. If there was an award for ' Place where you would most like to be', I would have chosen one of Walt's photos, and if there was a 'Most Dramatic Photo' I would have chosen Stringy's .

What do you all think? All suggestions welcome fellas !

I favor the action and motion shots -- it's hard to capture. So I went with:

1. Stringy/Chris -- Cherub
2. (tie) Skymax -- Catch Me If You Can, and reconlon -- Scott and Jack... Broad Reach

The choices were difficult and I was reluctant to pick! But somebody has to win that rudder pin. We could easily fill a beautiful calendar with 12 or 13 of these photos! Thanks to all for the outstanding pics -- IMO, everyone of the submitters deserves a rudder pin! 8)

I think the Photoshop issue is a matter of common sense. It's reasonable to crop an image or to adjust the lighting or hue. Most digital cameras do that anyway - that's why they have things like sunny or cloudy modes. If we took it to the extreme, all photos would have to be shot in RAW mode, with no modification by the camera.
On the other hand, pasting an image of an AI onto a nice landscape would not be in the spirit of the contest. I think most would agree that Stringy's fusion of the Sistine Chapel with Roadrunner's AI might have been pushing the envelope a bit.

Perhaps the line on photo manipulation should be a rule against the moving of images within the composition. It should be okay to filter out noise, adjust contrast, etc, but none of those move images from one place to another.
