First good sail of the new year. 5 of us kayak sailing in 3 Hobie Adventure Islands and a Tandem Island. 16 1/2 miles in under 3 hours, going mostly 8-10mph inches above the water. ![]() |

Looks like you guys had a great time. Thanks for posting your trip, Recon. Too wintery here for sailing, so I'm living vicariously though you. ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for that Bob. Really enjoyed your clip. Your part of the world looks like the ideal spot for AI's and TI's. Is your's the 2011 ? If so, how do you find it compared to previous models. |

The video was taken from my TI. My AI's are all older models, with upgrades, but not a 2011. I'm interested in the 2011's but will have to wait till the winter sailing ends to consider selling one of my older AI's to make room. I really hoped Hobie would make the newer AI's with more volume, so a higher deck like the TI. It's nice getting into the TI and not sitting in a puddle or getting wet until sailing faster than 6mph. Though, as you can see in the video, even my sprayskirts didn't help much to keep us dry that day. Luckily the water was warm, even if the air felt chilly. |

Nice video Bob ![]() I have just upgraded my old 2009 AI to 2011 but have not yet had a chance to use it (waiting on missing parts) but from my limited experience sailing my mates, it appears to be wetter than the 2009. I cancelled my TI order due to long delivery time delays and long o/seas trip but am now seriously considering reordering one. I think you said sometime ago you enjoy sailing it one up just as much as two up ![]() |

mickeymouse wrote: Nice video Bob ![]() Yep myself in front and my friend Dan's wife Jude in the back. I prefer the front seat in tha TI. mickeymouse wrote: I think you said sometime ago you enjoy sailing it one up just as much as two up In 18mph or less winds, they are both fun. I like the TI to take others out in, especially anyone new to Hobie's or kayak sailing. Above 18mph the TI is a lot of work, but handles any conditions we've run into. It can just be exhausting working that big sail and rudder in OH WOW conditions. ![]() The AI is my own little water sports car, in all conditions. ![]() |

The whales are later this year, but on this trip we did see some, but not close by.But Sunday, some came right by us! ![]() ![]() |

What's wrong with the water Bob ? That's the first shots I've seen of Maui where the AI isn't banked over at 45 degrees and in white water ! |

![]() Whale season, and too many storms coming through, blocking the trade winds. Don't worry, the wind and crazy wave pic's to return soon. |

OK, for all you snow bound AI sailors, here's 2 one hour videos from an under 3 hour sail of 4 Hobie AI's sailing from Maalaea Harbor to Kihei Boat Ramp on 01-20-2011 in nice wind, warm blue water, with some small wave surfing. 15 miles in under 3 hours - averaging 5.1mph - 10.2mph top speed Kayaking Bob, Scott, Dan & Jude Enjoy!
