Post subject:  Over night trips how do people 'pack'
I am wondering how people pack (not what, but how). Where do they stow things and how do they keep things dry. TI's are quite wet :P

I am planning a 1-3 night stay with the family on my TI, it is about a 4hour sail (wind accommodating), I have 2 tents, 1 cooker an eski (one of those 14day things - 40l) and personal ideas.

I was wondering how everyone stowed things.

If I go camping in my AI, I stow my camping hammock and sleeping bag and pillow in the front hatch, in a large dry sack, drinking water in the stern hatch, in flexible polythene bags and anything else above deck in the rear cargo area. Tents, sleeping bags and provisions for several people could get interesting.

Paul,
Use lots of drybags!
Anything inside the hull will get wet. We have a large collection of various sized drybags. For fitting in through the twist-n-lock hatch, don't go over 20L in size (Hobie OEM drybag) To keep them in position use a leash attached to the tiny hole made for that purpose on the internal lip of the hatch. We also have some large mesh diving bags that hold the smaller bags together once inside the hull.
We have 60L drybags for our sleeping bags, mats etc. We double bag those for extra dry security. They fit in the front hatch or on the rear deck. They can also be leashed for use on the tramps. We use a paddle leash attached to the FWD crossbar. My wife swaps them over to the other tramp when tacking. :)

I can't really add much more. It will be a learning experience for you and more than likely you won't get it 100% right the first go. Every trip I learn what I won't, or will, do next time. Have a safe trip.

P.S. Most important. Don't forget the camera.

Personally I like to send sherpas in an advance party. That way I have the tents and afternoon drinks and nibbles all ready....

Or what others have said....

Double bagging? Go you mean 2 dry bags or plastic bags in a dry bag?

I went camping with the 2 girls (wife and daughter) down to Inverloch, I could hardly fit the stuff in the car and the TI. All I could think of was how am I going to have a few days away with just the TI :wink:

I think I will have to cull something (wife daughter TI); I think I know which will not be culled (I can ot say - she may be listening 8) )

I'd be using drybag inside another drybag.

Paul - I am interested in the way you cartop the TI!
It looks like you have it rightway up supported by 2 roofrack bars and a T piece support coming off your towbar, without using any form of cushioning (pirate pillows) to prevent hull distortion. Am I correct in this??
perhaps the hull shape og the TI is not as prone to hull distortion but I think I would be concerned about it :roll: :roll: certainly if I was travelling anything more than a short local distance.

Looking at your setup, I truly cannot imagine transporting yourself, wife, daughter and all the necessary equipment required for the TI + camping in you sedan. Is it possible to hook up a trailer while you have the T piece attached?? (Where did you get the T piece - what brand is it??) I suspect not :roll:

It must be a hell of a job loading the TI on your roof - although it would not be as difficult as loading it onto a high 4WD vehicle. I would appreciate your comments on the above.

When I did my first overnight trip with Stringy, Chris and Slaughter a year ago, I was truly amazed just how much equipment can be stored in the hull and rear loading area of the AI. However I did not have the added challenge of 2 female companions to factor in. :roll: :roll:

You hit the nail on the head about the 2 girls!

I have taken the TI on quite a few long trips, the longest being about 3.5 hours drive. In fact; it was gown your way, Lake Wellington (temp 40degrees) to issue at all with the hull at all.

It is a Thule; I got it from my local dealer in Mornington.
I don't find it hard at all to get it on and off the car. With the girls I tend to do it all myself :? I went out with another friend the other day and he helped me get the TI on and off. I prefer doing it my myself (maybe I am a control freak?)

On the T bar at the back I have attached a teflon strip; and it just slides up there!

That's a Podtrailer. Plastic tub with lid that hinges on leading edge. Nice and waterproof. Great for chucking stuff in when the sherpas don't front up! I carry the rhino proof (not wombat proof however!) tent in there on longer trips

I looked at Scott's website but haven't managed to find that T bar :?
I seem to recall looking at a number of videos he had on his site that may have included it a long time ago :roll:
What is it actually called??
Can you still use your towbar when it's in place?? If that's possible then it would be feasible to tow a caravan and have a TI on the roof 8) :D
