Mickey states quite emphatically his 2011 Adventure Island sits and sails lower in the water than his 2009. I took the attitude that Matt expressed on this forum that same hull apart from cosmetic changes = same weight.
Now I have used mine a couple of times I have come to the conclusion Mickey may be right. It does seem a smidge lower in the water than my 2009 model. Also as I car-top mine I get to lift it up and down and I really feel the new one seems heavier than the old one. It also seems more bow heavy which requires me to push the hull further back on the roof racks. I mentioned this to Mickey who has drilled holes for his dodger fittings and he states the plastic was thicker in the places he drilled than on his old one. He trailers his so he has no experience with picking up the boat. An inspection inside seems to me to indicate it has been beefed up around the scuppers and mirage drive area as compared with what I remember of the old one. But I could be imagining it.
Could it be that Hobie have upped the specs in relation to thickness in order to overcome possible cracks and ruptures and making the boat even more bombproof?
Or is it that old pirates just arn't as strong as they used to be
Here I am inspecting the waterline from outside the boat..

Couple things...

Thickness of the plastic does vary from boat to boat and possibly due to changes in the rotation formula or the oven it was made in. We also inflate the hulls during cooling and that can make them vary as well. I don't think we added any plastic.

Thanks for that Matt. I was hoping you would reply to this. I should say I am very happy with the new model so far....Pirate
