Off out into the bay tomorrow on my new Ti (have had it on the lake twice now). Forecast looks to be F2-4 depending where one looks. Anything I should do re preventative measures... any tips? As an example I read that some people tie the Akas so they cannot pop out... (just Ai or Ti as well?). Just anything you wished you knew before venturing onto the ocean. Many thanks in advance Julian |

Easy does it. Take small steps. Check at least 2 sources of weather conditions to make sure all is favourable. Let others ( family, coast guard ) know where what your route is. Always best to go with others if possible. There are plenty of posts listing what equipment to take. The wind direction turned against me once and within a 1/2 hour I had a 25knot wind to fight without a dagger board. Lucky I was in the lake and not out at sea. It was a wake up call for me as to how quickly things change. Enjoy your trip mate. Don't forget the trip report. |

Thanks for that. Good advice. I wish there were some other Ai or Ti's in the area to go out with but not at the moment. I'm alright with the kit (have sea kayaked for many years). Maybe the estuary tomorrow if the wind is anything other than light. |

Where are you located? La Gringa and I were out five miles offshore in our new TI yestereday in 17 kts. gusting to over 20. We had a great time. Got soaked repeatedly, of course! But then, we live in the tropics. Also got a sunburn. I guess it would be different if we were dodging icebergs and such. |

You got a wet suit, right? These are wet, wet boats. Especially for the front passenger. We were out for five hours yesterday in winds that were blowing 16-18 kts when we started. We checked our home weather station when we got back, and during our trip they gusted to 24 kts. several times. We were sailing reefed, and had a steep, three ft. chop. La Gringa got blasted by so many waves I think it started to take some of the fun out of it after about an hour beating back into it. We were sailing in bathing suits. Eventually, getting the equivalent of a five gallon bucket of sea water thrown in her face about every three to five seconds ( chop) started to work on ruining her sunny disposition. We are going to have to come up with some spray protection, obviously. I did a quick look around here for sun screen material, to build some from Bob's plans, but cannot find anything like that here. Or even anyone who knows what I am asking about. Will have to pick it up on next trip to the USA, or have one of our visitors bring it down. |

I have a dry suit. I also have some of Bob's splash things but not fitted them yet. |

Gringo, I built a couple of sets of splash shields and a set of trampolines from trampoline material. They work great. Here is a link to Sail Rite, the site I bought the material from http://www.sailrite.com/Trampoline-Mesh-Black-74 . They do international shipping. My wife and I have been buying material and supplies from them for years and their customer service is outstanding. We even own one of their heavy duty sewing machines. |
