We're still here on Maui! :)

Some waves, a +6' wave washed in 1/3 of a mile in from Kahului harbor, reports of some damage in Kihei. So far no reports of major damage or loss of life.

Why do I have this weird feeling that the reason that NOHUHU hasn't replied yet is because he's out there giving the BATBOAT some final torture tests.

Good to hear that the rest of you are doing well.

Tired but doing fine. Mahalo Nui Loa Kakou!

Mrs NOHUHU and I were on emergency response teams. on standby all night till 7am, and it's time to start regular work now. :(

We're live on the edge of the evac zone and along a canal, so we were packed an ready to go in case. Sirens and bullhorns went off all the time till 3am and then there was dead silence, even on the emergency radio net.

Eerie feeling. Watching and waiting for the worst. After seeing the horrible mess in Japan we were seriously on edge. Those 30 ft standing waves on TV were ungodly.

So, when over 1/4 mile of reefs in Waikiki were quickly sucked dry we held out breath, but the massive tidal surges did not come. For a couple hours, we saw rapid tidal swings of at least 5-6 ft, but no walls of water. (Exhale).

After last years tsunami and our recent earthquake, we now have a great warning system in place. And we usually have a couple hours to prepare for waves out here in the middle of the pond.

It was an all nighter, but we are real fortunate not to wake up to the scenes of utter disaster that our Japanese friends are facing.

And yes, in the back of my mind, I knew the Batboat was ready to deploy, just in case.

It's good to know that you're safe NOHUHU. However... remember how you always tell us to swing by your little island, and then you finish with a statement "Like you'd ever leave."

I'm good with our snow and cold.

No crazy waves, no massive earthquakes... just a bit of snow and cold. No problem.

Take care out there!

Hope the Mayan calendar prediction for 2012 isn't correct

Oh, the prediction is correct alright, which is the long count calendar ending on Dec 21 2012. But don't confuse mayan predictions of the calendar ending with other predictions about what that means. The mayans themselves never said the ending of the calendar ever amounted to more than a reset of the clock, like your car tacho clocking over. It's a whole bunch of other groups that have attached meaning to it.

Whether the doomsday predictions turn out true or not will probably depend on what we choose to attribute to it. The world is in a right mess now and for sure, is getting worse rapidly. Fasten your fricken seat-belts! At this rate it will be difficult for many to not blame all of this stuff on '2012'.

I think what Paul Watson ( Sea Shepherd's captain ) said on telly last night hit the nail on the head. Insects and animals can survive quite happily on this earth without humans. Humans can't survive without them. Consider this earth a spaceship on which there are crew and passengers. Guess which is which, and which is most important. The sooner us passengers accept the importance of the crew, the better.

I should update this story, out of respect for those who did sustain damage here in the aloha state. The tsunami waves arrived in the middle of the night here. As daylight came and reports flooded in from parts of the islands, there was residual damage along the coastlines, that caught us by surprise.

What was so alarming is that the islands are in a direct impact zone for waves from this event. There was really nothing but time to protected us in this case. We were very fortunate it was not worse. (Believe me, we were just happy to see sunrise!)

Strong surges of 4-8 ft were recorded, with damages totaling $300 million at last count. It really depended where you were. Most small boat harbors were trashed to some degree, with piers breaking away and boats piling up on each other or sinking. Some of the most protected harbors faired the worse, due to rapid tidal washing. Image

Dozens of homes were damaged and one even floated away on the Big Island. The poor owner of this house was in Honolulu getting kidney dialysis at the time. Ouch.

The main road in Kona was washed out and hotels and stores there took a beating in the dark. Many are now closed. Historic and cultural sites saw serious damage. No one was killed.

This was shot hours after the main event.

It all was pin prick compared to the rotten luck of the good Japanese people, who will be totaling the tsunami costs in lives, billions of dollars and years of suffering. My hat is off to them for the wise way they prepare for disasters like this and the great dignity they have shown in the face of near total devastation.

Our Aloha goes out to them as well.
