Post subject:  Contemplating purchase of TI...

I have followed this forum for the last few weeks in anticipation of buying a TI for use in the inner-coastal waters of N. Carolina (Pamlico Sound / Neuse river). Lots of places to explore, good wind, etc. It however does have a lot of shoal areas and I was wondering whether I should wait to order until Hobie has the new rudder available, which sounds from reading this forum that this would be better in these conditions? Any TI/AI sailors in this area already who could advise?

Thx!

The TI is heaps of fun already, yes the rudder can be a small pain but why miss out on the fun you could be having now. I own 2 TIs and have a great time on each trip.

I see no reason to wait.

Just took my TI out 2 times this weekend, first time this year.
Last year I was still waiting for it...

I have had my rudder issues but in most cases the rudder even w/o the fix worked well. For me, it was in higher winds where things tend to get a little interesting.

The current bungee fix has worked well and my secondary fix (nylon nut/bolt to keep rudder from lifting up) - have both worked well.

I would think if you are in shallows you would not be using the sail - or at least not full sail so I think you are fine.

Plus, you are missing out on all the fun...

Whilst I agree with the previous posts, you are more likely to have a bad experience with the current rudder than with the forthcoming fix! It is simple and effective! The last thing you want is to loose control of your boat - particularly if you are trying to introduce an apprehensive newby to the delights it offers! Kinda like introducing someone to sxxxx

Thanks all for helping me push my decision to lay out the clams and buy! It really did not need lot reading the posts and watching some of the great videos. Great free marketing for Hobie! Besides, I hear the economy still need stimulus $'s so that is how I will explain to the wife. According to mickymouse there should be other benefits as well :D

Hope Hobie will make a retrofit rudder option available soon. Until then I will follow the wise recommendations / mods put forth my this forum and get out there with a TI sooner than later! Thinking the Dune color should work well.
