Hello, I'm about 40 miles from Pamlico sound and I was wondering if it was better to use the intracoastal or to follow the outer banks around the bay. Is anyone on the list from the area? |

I don't live there full time and can't claim to be an expert, but I think you are better off following the ICW and stick closer to the inner banks. More amenities and and facilities in case you need them. Also, Pamilo Sound has very nasty chop when it blows. The southern part of the outer banks are pretty desolate given that most are in protected areas. Definitely stop in Oriental alongs the way (Sailing capital of North Carolina). Lots of friendly and adventurous folks like you. You still have the option to cross over the Neuse river and follow the OBX after talking to folks in Oriental. Good luck!! Walt A |

Thanks, most of what i hear about Pamlico Sound is pretty nasty. Looking at the map you would think that hugging the coast all around would be the wise choice. |

I would say it depends on what type of a boat you are using. If you are kayaking and like to spend time in God's country, then hug the banks. But, be ready for some shallow water. On the lower western Pamlico Sound there are some Navy Bombing ranges with restricted waters. Some of the Watertribe members are from North Carolina and paddle/sail this area. See http://sandybottomkayaker.blogspot.com/, http://cs20dawnpatrol.blogspot.com/,http://logofspartina.blogspot.com/,http://www.microcruising.com/2006obx.htm They all have articles within their Blogs about some of the cruising grounds around Pamlico Sound... |
