| Post subject: | Remove Aka's or Ama's? |
I recently traded my Wave in on a new TI because I don't have a ramp and I have to manhandle the boat into the water over a dock, then down onto a floating dock. My only question is how best to make to boat narrow enough to get it between the pilings. Should I remove the Aka's or the Ama's? I've tried both methods and it will fit either way. I think it's easier to remove the Ama's. except the bungees are incredibly tight, I think I need to make a device to be able to pull them on and off. I find the Aka's are somewhat difficult to get on and off on the floating dock, although they may loosen up with use. Any recommendations? Oh, and I just love the TI. |

If you fold out (open) the aka, the ama's come off much easier. Then fold back in the ama. Some people (myself at times) roll the boats to the launch with the ama tied onto the top of the hull. |

Hiyas I can only clear my garden fence if I remove both akas and amas. The added advantage is that it reduces the weight of the main hull as I drag it over a rock strewn beach on a centered wheel cart to the sea and assemble the rig at ocean shore level. No matter what it takes, the trip(s) are worth it. The biatch is getting the whole mess back home. In all it is well worth it Regards Fred |

Postcript... I've obviously have learned to read tide chart data. If tides are not a factor in your sailing area, think through the steps that it takes to minimize the work to get your boat launched in the least amount of steps/effort. The less energy you waste in launching (or retrieving) your boat the more ergs you will add to your sailing experience  Regards |

The nasty Aka lock.. Not a biggy. Make sure you're in line with the aka joint (as reconlon mentioned). If the crossbar pins seem to be pinched, you are not in line. Try to twist the akas slightly in line (left to right, or the other way) and push the crossbar pins. Make it so Commander. Sometimes just a slight twist sideways will release the pin mechanism. (NO FORCE) (Remember that if you fold in the amas to the hull, the bungies holding them onto the akas will get stretched. I try to balance the hull in the sand before adding the akas first and then grab the center handle of the amas to fit them. Locking the rear akas to the hull seems to make this process a lot easier if you are doing this solo) Fred |
