Post subject: | Rudder question?? |
Hi, can anyone out there help? ... I just bought an AI 2009, it's great but for one major issue - tacking into a significant wind, I can't keep the boat from being turned right into the wind no matter how hard I turn the rudder (where I get stuck and have to peddle like crazy!) ... Is this because I'm stupid or because the AI 2009 has too small a rudder to be effective in even a moderate wind?? If this is the case can the new modified rudder for 2011 AI be fitted?? Any guidance hugely appreciated! Thanks |

If that doesn't do it, you need to furl the sail a bit. No, you're not stupid. The problem (weather helm) is inherent in all boats that lack a foresail to balance the rotational effect of the mainsail. While it's possible to fight against it with a bigger rudder, it's better to control it by adjusting the trim of the sail. I've found the 2009 rudder adequate in all conditions. |

Thanks for that ... very clear ... yes, I can see foresail would make a difference |

had same problem on first sail. cleating the rudder down with the bungee eliminated the problem. ![]() |

Is cleating the rudder down easily done? or a DIY extra? ... all I've ever done is pull the "down" toggle ... am out of country so can't take a look at the AI right now and see what's possible. ... thanks |

The 2009 rudder doesn't have the bungee mod. If you don't already have the sailing rudder then need a bigger rudder, reef your main, or install a foresail. I have the same problem with a 2011 AI with the twist and stow rudder. Do not know how the new vertical rudder handles but would need to modify the transom on your 2009 hull to mount the 2011 rudder. |

Just pulling the "Down" line and making sure it's locked in its cleat is all that's necessary on the 2009. |
