I think there are 388 members posting and I'm unable to locate the post about rigging rope that has some stretch in such a way that when the shear pin breaks on the aka the ama is still held out to prevent a knock down until the boat can be sailed back to a shore or protected area so that replacement can be inserted. The guy who posted was in Florida and had added a spinaker and jib to his AI or TI to allow him more speed in prevaling light air common in summer in Florida. I'm interested in adding this rigging but I'm unable to find his post which had some details and photos of what he did and explanation of how to do it and how it works. Its going to be 106F here in DFW area today and I'm hesitant about doing anything outdoors so it might be a good time to explore some things that are indoors like this forum. If anybody knows what I'm looking for please post. Thanks. |

longkayakwithsail: That was my post I did a long time ago. Here is a link to the posting (The ultimate Tandem Island (hydrofoils, Spinnaker, jib, etc) viewtopic.php?f=69&t=33720&start=45 On page 4 someone else asked how to rig the safety line, and I explained further. I haven't really made any additional mods to the boat since then, I just use it as is, everything still works great and I haven't had any difficulties with the rigging besides normal wear and tear on the ropes and sails ( I have over a thousand miles on the rigging now). The trampolines also help keep the AMA's out in the event of a pin break. I actually spend most of my time out on the tramps when sailing. Whenever I go out in rough water or plan on pushing the boat I always rig the safety line. I have never broken a sheer pin while out on the water but have broken 3 bumping docks and helpers trying to help (trying to pull the boat by the AMA's). The way I figure it is with just the mainsail (90 sq ft) if you hit a gust and bury the AMA at 7-8 mph it shouldn't break, but if hauling at 18 mph, if that AMA goes under I'm concerned about that pin breaking which would probably cause a pitchpole at that speed.
