Post subject:  how to right a capsized mirage tandem island?
We have just bought a TI and would like to know how to right it if we should capsize. Has anyone ever done this? I am 76 and want to be safe but love to go fast. Any advice.

The trimaran setup of the Tandem Island makes it
extremely stable and nearly impossible to capsize under
most conditions. However, unexpected events do occur,
so it is important to know how to “right” the boat if it
were to turn upside down.

is so stable with the

hard quickly, but to pull with a constant, steady load.
Step 5. As it rolls back up, watch for the boat coming
over your head. Once the Island is upright, roll up
the sail and fold out both amas so you can climb back
into the boat. Hang onto the boat at all times so it
doesn't sail or drift away from you"

Thank you for the info. That is perfect. We have not received our boat yet so we will carefully read the manual when we get it. Do you recommend tipping it over and righting it for practice before we take it out on the lake? Would this be a good idea? Joker

Practice is HIGHLY recommended! You don;t want to try it for the first time in a panic.

Reality is, the Tandem Island is very stable. Chances of going over are pretty unlikely, but being ready will make you more confident / comfortable with the boat.

Thank you so much, that is a great relief for me. I want to see if I can pull myself up into the boat with a dry suit on. Is there any easier place to enter the boat than another place? I am not strong. We have a Taipan F16 and I cannot pull myself into it, my husband has to pull me in. Thank you again. Joker

The "free board" is minimal, so much easier than a cat to climb aboard. Behind the rear seat is the lowest point (6" or less?), but the akas arms can help you climb up in the middle of the boat.

Great, I will try it when we go out on the Lake in Oct. Thank you so much for all your help. If you have any other tips please send them to me. Is it true that in 15 knots or more not to use the tramps? I have been reading about wind catching under the windward one and putting the other under the water. I do not want to tip over if I can possibly help it. Out Cat scares me for that reason. That is why we are getting the TI. More stability. Joker

I don't think 15 knots is an issue. Maybe in more wind, but it is not a big deal. Especially on the Tandem, where the crew can climb out on the tramps to hold it down.

I bought THIS strap to use as a stirrup - it makes it much easier for the Mrs. to get into the boat. I put it from aka to aka hanging out over the ama with tramps and just over the side of the boat before I bought tramps.

Options I choose: 15 foot, plastic single adjust buckle and no stitching. 12 foot probably would be fine. Cost was $8.90 including shipping.

I'm suprised that people with video cameras and TI's haven't been jumping at the oportunity to 'be the first' to show how to right one. If only I had a TI :roll:

Slaughter you can always come sail with us on Lake Heron in New Mexico. Lake in the middle of no where, beautiful. We with cats all camp right on the waterfront, it is great. 5 dollars a night. I do not take life too seriously that is why I sail.

You know you don't need to travel that far to test a TI though it's a tempting offer for sure! :wink: Any time you want to 'crew' the TI for the capsize demo just let me know.
Personally, in 3 years of sailing AI's and now a TI I haven't come close to capsizing so I don't consider it a priority. (I have read the details in the manual on how to do it though -just in case)
You know if you really want a TI it's not that hard to get- just part with some of that hard earned you've got! Easy :lol:

We already did and we are waiting to receive it. We are so excited. Ours is red. I wish we could get an all red sail and then we would look like the Flying Dutchman. Cool
