Hey guys,

So, I was invited by my neighbor to go out kayaking about three weeks ago here in lovely Lake Powell AZ/UT. She had a paddle Tarpon 120 and a Hobie Sport pedal kayak. We cruised around as I acquainted myself with the aspects of paddling but was not at this time super impressed. Eventually she let me try her pedal Sport and this is where I became interested. Wow, super stable, turns on a dime and cruises. I had all of about 5 minutes of time onboard the Sport to formulate my uninformed opinions.

I got back to the house and started researching all the different "YAKS" on the Hobie website. This led to the videos and of course an immediate infactuation with the Adventure Island.

So, long story short.. I think I made a pretty good purchase this week. Tell me if you agree or if I could have done better.

I was able to pick up a twice used 2011 AI with:
Dodger
Sea Anchor
Anchor
Heavy Duty Wheels
Ama Bag
Black Trampolines
for $3000

and.... A 2011 Revolution 13 for $1549
of course shipping costs and extras (accessories) applied for a total of $5400.

Retail for the AI alone is $3750 + $200 freight charge for ballpark figure of $4000
and for the Revolution 13 is $1850 + $200 freight charge for $2100, so in retail alone this figure comes to about $6100 add the fact that I got almost a $1000 in goodies with the AI and that brings out total to $7000ish.

Im so stoked and am trying to patiently await arrival of all the goodies! All said I think I got a pretty darn good deal.

Welcome to the Hobie way of life. We have a Revo and a TI and really enjoy our boats. You won't find a more versatile boat on the market today. We are out on ours every single weekend all year round. We are also avid scuba divers and often dive from our TI mostly down in the Florida keys where we go about 1 week per month, the rest of the time we are around the Tampa bay area.

Yes you did very well, Hobie's are very rare on the used market, mostly because people like them so much and don't want to sell them. They also hold their value better than almost any boat out there so you are very lucky to have stumbled on such a great deal.

Looks like a delivery date of sometime late next week. :cry: Going out tomorrow to get my YAK fix though with a borrowed boat. Its great to have friends with extra YAKS!!!

Off topic: I watched the Watertribe video posted and was encouraged by the assistance rendered to other racers when in need. Very sportsmanlike.

Does anyone recommend a Sailing For Dummies book or any other Sailing how to book?

Welcome to the forum and many congratz on your purchases.
I can only speak for the AI and it's about as much legal fun without getting a mugshot, imho.
There's also great sailing further south on the Colorado.
As the wind seems to blow downstream in the winter time, Lake Havasu, AZ might also be a worthy destination.
But to say the least Lake Powell, could keep you busy for months.

Oh Yah,
Yup you did well on the money line. really, these boats are tough as hell to get used unless they have been beaten to death in the rental fleets.
Until you get to know how the boat handles, don`t add anything to the AI except safety gear, the usual stuff, PFDs, a pump, a few feet of line and the usual water bottles and cell phones in waterproof cases.
You may also want to consider how to get the boats on top of your cars...
There`s plenty of posts here to help you with that choice.
