I notice Broken/crack mast couple week ago and I contact the dealer. The dealer fill out an claim and Hobie came back with a no to the replacement or discount price. Man I'm piss out  , I thought Hobie very good but I guess not. Now I have to save around $500 buck to buy new one.

siracer28: If thats the only damage, if it were me I would make a short aluminum tubing sleeve about a foot long (can be very loose in the hole down at the bottom of the mast), place on the inside and fill with epoxy down near the bottom. Yea the mast will be a little heaver, but who cares. It certainly will never break there again. If the bottom piece is loose or bent (at the break), you might want to tape some metal rods or angle iron to the outside to hold everything straight and true until done, and if there are holes or cracks through the walls of the mast where the epoxy might ooze out, just tape over them beforehand with masking tape, then after everything sets up remove the tape and the angle iron from the outside and you've got yourself a fixed mast that will likely outlast the original (stronger). I would get an epoxy with at least 30 minutes or longer working time and thin enough to be able to pour down into the mast bottom (West Marine probably has something that will work). If your really worried about the weight, tape over the ends of the aluminum tubing before inserting the tube into the mast so the epoxy is only around the tube (not on the inside). The aluminum tube doesn't have to be perfectly centered in the mast since you are filling around it with epoxy anyway. Bob |

Good idea. Similar to the one hobie sells for the base of the 2007 AI mast.  I am impressed siracer28. This what happens to "real" men, who never furl or hurl while sailing.

That mast is the older model. I can only assume that the boat is out of it's two year warranty for starters. Simply breaking parts is not always warranty. That one is quite unusual as well. I suspect high winds and not properly locked in? |

Also not removing the mast after sailing and then driving home. Those low level bridges will get ya every time. |

I have to agree with Matt. If the mast starts to pop up you reduce the support and there is a shorter section to take the load. When my mast released in the NCC I slowed down, reset the mast and furled to reduce the loads. The pictures show the most stress at the lower section, like there was a lot of side thrust. I would look into the mast receiver to see if there are any signs of rubbing against the sides and how high up the tube... |

I think all us regulars realise how to spot legit warranty claims. When you get a new member ie: 1 post, who has a failure but has no details, and then doesn't respond to any questions........I smell a rat. And the 4 year, 2nd owner details confirm my suspicions. |

sorry been busy fixing the mast. I think the problem is the defect Mast Retention Spring Clip cause the mast to pop out plus heavy wind cause the crack in the mast. |

Sorry sircer28, Passwind was right, that was harsh of me. But, being new to the forum, you may not know that Hobie quite often go beyond the call of duty to fix issues. Many times well outside the warrenty period. Many other companies would do well by taking a leaf out of Hobie's book. Another thing we have seen many times, are owners massaging the facts to get issues fixed for free. Not saying this is you but we have all seen it in the past. Really hope you get the mast fixed and that some of the advice you get from this forum helps. |
