Bought my used 2012/2011 AI saturday and took it for a test sail Sunday. I have a lot to learn and look forward to every bit of it. The winds were just too strong for me. I won't bore anyone by posting the video showing how well I can operate the mirage drive in a strong headwind, but I will share how I made a gopro camera mount for the akas by modifying that useless Gopro suction cup mount. Started with a set of molded rubber paddle holders like this http://www.yak-gear.com/Kayak-Paddle-Clips.html . Screwed one holder to each end of a small piece of plywood. Both on the same side. The paddle holders will eventually fit tight on the akas. Take the gopro suction cup mount and cut the end off of the long rivit/pin and remove the pin, suction cup and "press here" button. I used a dremel tool. Drill a hole in the plywood for a large bolt to pass up through the playwood and out of the hole remaining in the suction cup mount. A washer and a wingnut and you're set to rotate or angle in any direction. Oh, and don't forget to add a safety line. I can e-mail a picture if anyone is interested. |

Thanks for posting it Bob. I'm thinking of using the same rubber paddle holders to attach a bench to the akas. That will be some time though. Need to learn to sail first. LOL. |

Post subject: | GoPro mount for cross-bar/aka |
I measured the diameter of the front cross-bar and bought a PVC T-Coupling which had an equal interior diameter. The coupling had a threaded interior in the T-arm. I cut the coupling in half along the main length. The coupling is then mounted on the cross-bar with two hose clamps. I put a threaded end cap into the T-arm. A 1/4-20 SS bolt was installed through the end cap. I can then mount the GoPro anywhere I want on the cross-bar and adjust the camera angle. Because the GoPro has a water-proof case the camera action is quite spectacular when the TI tries to bury its bow in chop. |
