Post subject:  First day out, missing rudder retainer
I took my new TI out sailing for the first time last week. Spent about 3 hours on the water, and when I came home I noticed that the bungee and red webbing strap used to retain the rudder was gone without a trace. I'm not even sure where it originally attached to the hull, but it's nowhere to be found on the stern.

Is this a common thing? Is it important that I get a new one? Seems like the rudder wobbles a lot in the wind when I drive with it on the trailer.

I don't use the rudder retainer. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

it hooked onto a little metal/silver thing near where the rear handle is tied to. you can always just cleat down the up rudder stow line.

I don't believe it was meant to stay clipped to the hull when not in use. Not a critical piece, but useful depending how you transport and store your boat.

Apart from the red strap thingy, my new hull still has the bungee that used to hold down the old T&S rudder. Does this have some use that has escaped me, or is it a residual useless appendage?

Residual useless appendage, but they can be changed out for other connections. I use the plastic cleats I replaced them with, to hold a shaped rug piece to protect the rear bottom of the hull while loading and unloading.

The Original T&S bungee is still there so that you can take the rudder off and lay it flat across the deck still.

Thanks Jacques It hadn't occurred to me to remove the rudder. It could save a lot of hassles when rolling the boat over to drain it.

good idea! I use it to secure the sail when transporting.

First sail...ouch
Some authorized dealers really have no clue on how to set it up out of the box. That should have been clipped onto the aft eyepad but if not secure and snapped correctly it will be gone in seconds.
The aft bungee I use for the mast while bagged while transporting
