Any hints for getting tell tales to stream? Mine just stick to the sail on both sides. Mine are yarn. Should they be ribbons of sailcloth? |

Mine are strips of nylon sailcloth. Some people prefer wool yarn. Two things will keep them from streaming - sticking to the sail and improper sail trim. Some people will wipe the sail with a non-stick potion of some sort to keep the tells from sticking to it. That eliminates the first scenario most of the time. |

Unfortunately, wool tufts tend to be a bit too clingy when used on sails; they are best used on a yacht's shrouds, which of course we don't have! When I wore out my Hobie telltales, I scrounged some red and green offcuts of spinnaker material, and stuck them on. Having different colours is worthwhile though, as it speeds up the effectiveness of the quick glance upwards to check sailtrim. Even they are not perfect, as after a while the edges fray just a fraction, just enough to catch on nearby seams of the sail, or even the edges of the clear window. I think I need to replace them about once a year. Tom, thanks for reminding me... a very suitable non-stick solution is McLube, which is designed precisely for reducing friction on sail materials. Good yacht chandlers should stock it. |

I suggest ordering from your Hobie dealer either Black Beauties tell-tails #335 (black) or Air-Flow Tels #334 (green & red) - under $10 for many years supply of much better ones than the yarn. |

You could try wiping the area with a dryer (anti static) cloth? |

The fancy euro sails I bought for my H16 came with yarn Tell Tales... I found them to be totally worthless... The second time up the mast I replaced them with 8 track tape until I could get around to putting proper ones in place.. I still haven't switched them out..

I got some ribbon ones from West Marine that seldom stick. Before I got them, I'd whack the sail with the paddle to free the yarn ones. So the ribbon ones mean a lot less wear and tear on the sail and one less reason to carry a paddle. I also put a lightweight ribbon off the top batten. It's a nice indicator and looks cool, but does sometimes try to strangle the top of the sail. I have had to sail in circles to unwind it. Had a problem with one of my tell tales this past weekend. The ribbon was starting to fray around the edges and got wrapped up on the patch that holds it preventing proper indication. Super easy fix obviously but still something to check before heading out. Adam |
