Getting my tandem island soon and have no clue how to sail, never even been on a sailboat. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any instructional videos. I have searched YouTube and found several videos on the TI and AI but no instructional videos on how to actually use the boat and sail. I understand that this boat is supposed to be extremely easy to use but would still like some instruction. Since I don't live in the coastal areas, not many people around my area have these boats, at least I don't know anyone and have never seen one on the lake.

Sailing the TI has got to be the easiest boat I've ever sailed. The only thing you have to remember is that you can't sail directly into the wind. I know it's cheesy but here is a basic sailing video. I'm sure you found similar ones on youtube.

One of the nice things about the TI is that you don't have to worry about getting stuck in irons (pointing into the wind). The mirage drives help you out in this case.

Here is another video courtesy of Tom Kirkman that explains a little about sail trim on a TI.

The "instruction" starts about 1:45 in.

If you Google "Yacht Club near Anderson, SC" you'll get 3 or 4 hits. Try contacting them. I'm sure they'll be happy to help!

Dead easy mate I'd never sailed before, these boats almost sail themselves, you'll pick it up easy enough and hone your skills the more you do it

I started last year, and like you I had no idea how to sail. You'll figure it out after a few tries. My first time I didn't rig the sail correctly and couldn't sail. I would say make sure you rig the craft properly before you go out. No hard in failing to rig properly, but be prepared to paddle your way back to shore.

Just start slowly, pick a day where it isn't too breezy, let the sail out a tiny bit and get the feel for it. Fell free to ask anything, there are no dumb questions as we all started somewhere

I can't remember exactly where, but there is an excellent document (Word, I believe) on this forum that I used to learn, along with the paperwork that came with the TI. Do a search on sailing in this forum and see what you can find.

I know everyone else has said this, but here is how easy this thing is to sail - I had never sailed in my life; I picked up my TI brand-new from my dealer, trailered it 10 hours to South Florida, and read the word document on how to sail on the way down (not while driving LOL). We launched, a breeze blew up, I unfurled the sail, trimmed it using the tell tales, and the boat took off. Since that very moment, the idea of using a paddle has become very distasteful.
Enjoy!

We're happy new owners of a (used) 2014 TI. Best purchase my husband and I have made in a long time! Thank you so much to the folks responsible for the beginner sailing document posted here, specific to sailing the TI. We took a class last summer using our local club's JYs and were glad for the basic sailing experience, but the allure of getting clocked in the head by the boom wears off quickly! The TI is its own beast (in so many very wonderful ways!) and sailing it eliminates so many of the hassles and really adds to the fun for a couple of middle aged day sailors like us. We look forward to getting to know the craft better, and also to learn more about sailing in general.

The support of this forum is very welcome. Thanks!
