I know a lot of you may want to try a jib on your boats. Getting one made by a sailmaker is pretty darn expensive. Here's how to do one on your own for about $10.

Here's the tarp jib in action.

Now thats a great way to document function on a video. Nicely done. What software lets you create such grapics? Would love to be able to do that.

I would like to be able to snuff my jib like that. How does your jib attach at the head? Or rather, how is the halyard attached at the head so that you can reef the main separately?

At the top of the mast there is a screw going down the center. Surrounding the screw is washer, thrust bearing, bracket, thrust bearing and another washer. The bracket faces forward and the spinnaker and the jib halyard go up to blocks mounted on that bracket.

Assuming you can cleat the halyards off tightly, the mast will roll around and reef. Without the thrust bearings, the halyard sometimes wraps around the mainsail making a mess.

The software for the tracking stuff is all included in the camera, so even dummies like me can put the dashboard on the video. It is a Sony Action Cam AS100V. Thanks for the kudo's on the video. I am getting more experienced at making them.

Does the screw go through the mainsail webbing and into the mast cap?

My boat is a Triak. The mainsail pocket does not cover the top of the mast, the mainsail head is held to the mast on an eyestrap on the mast. On a Hobie AI/TI; you would have to modify your mast cap to accommodate a bolt and embed a nut and you may also have to modify your mainsail if it extends over the top of the mast--simplest would be adding a grommet so the bolt can go through.
