What is the purpose of the lip below the forward port side crossbar (and below the aft starboard side crossbar)? I noticed that, along with the bungees just aft of them, make for a convenient paddle holder.

Right. If you were in pure kayak mode with the akas removed, that's where you'd stow the paddle. |
