If anyone is interested the TI makes for a great rescue craft. I had the unfortunate opportunity to test this out over the weekend. I took my two older kids (12 and 9) sailing on one of our local lakes. The weather was nice around 72F water temps were in the 60's winds 10-20 mph. We had just beached to take a break at the local sailing club. They have a cat beach that makes launching easier. I happened to look out into the water and noticed something bobbing about 400-500 ft. away. After a minute or two I noticed that it was two people in the water. I thought it was odd that someone would be swimming. Then I noticed they had a capsized boat between them. Upon realizing that they were not able to right the boat themselves I grabbed my daughter (she's the oldest and stronger) and we put the boat in and headed for them. I was quite impressed how quickly we covered the distance. We even beat a john boat with a trolling motor and he was closer. As we approached it was clear that they had taken a wave broadside to their canoe and had gone in. I was able to drift up next to them and pull one individual up onto a tramp. I offered to take her for a sail and she kindly declined. The other individual was assisted by the john boat. We got them to shore with their overturned canoe without further incident. It felt good to lend a hand especially since this was only our second time out in the TI. Some things to note:

Cool beans, that water is still too cold to be doing that. We just had a guy from AFAW die on that lake over the winter because he wasn't wearing a pfd, couldn't swim, and flipped a canoe. |

Yep, I remember that accident. At least these people were wearing PFDs. She was shivering pretty good and had only been in the water maybe 5-10 minutes. I'm just glad we could lend assistance. |

Lets get the Omaha Hobies together at Lake Cunningham. Plus we can have our first unofficial meeting of the Land Locked Island Club. Should be a good day for saililng and pedaling... Joe |

We'll keep an eye on the weather for Saturday. I wouldn't be able to get out there until about 1230 (daughter has soccer practice), but I would love to get together. |

Defy, I know how you feel. I use to race Hobie's Prindles, Nacra's even an olympic class Tornado, down on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. But suprisingly I have found I am very happy sailing my island here in land locked Nebraska. Now going to the Nebraska/Iowa thread and reactivate it... Joe Land Locked Island Club. LLIC |
