I installed a Garmin FishFinder and before I go out this year, I am wonder if I should protect the device more than it currently is. Here is what it currently looks like
If this device gets splashed A LOT, is that ok?

My Lowrance is mounted right beside the sail mast and gets pummeled with spray whenever I'm plowing through waves. So far it's working just fine as-is, though I did put some sealant in the external antenna connector since I'll never use it. It had a little rubber cap on it originally but that fell off pretty quickly. I don't know if the bare connector itself is waterproof without the cap so sealed it to be sure. Haven't had any issue with water under the rubber cover for the SD card. I open mine fairly often at home to copy my tracks off to the computer. Protection aside, I'd like to have one of those visors to shade the screen from the sun, would be a lot easier to read with that on it. |

I fill my unused ports with silicon adhesive and my used ports with Di-electric grease. The grease keeps any water out and also has kept the rubber flaps stuck closed. |

Watch out for plastic windows, as I found the reflections very annoying, and my final solution is an open-fronted plastic container. |

Any info appreciated. The plastic screen is sewn. You can get some reflection on the plastic. I find the visibility better because of the visor. Visability is only a problem when the sun is behind you, which was a problem without the cover as well. |

I contacted the company that was linked earlier in this post, the one that sells the visor/cover. They don't make one for garmin but you could buy one and hope it fits. Looking at the dimensions of the devices the cover is made more, they are quite a bit different than the garmin, I don't think the garmin will fit. I may do like others on this thread and just seal whatever ports I am not using and let it go at that. |

The Garmin unit is waterproof and will withstand splash and rain forever. However, it is in transporting and storing the boat that most units are damaged, stolen, etc. Garmin makes a hard plastic screen cover for most units for travel. Generally, I remove my unit when traveling or storing and put it inside the hull or my dry box. |
