What would be the proper two main hull locations for my docking whips? They currently are about 10' apart on my dock. The whips are for up to 24' power boats.
They will easily span across both extended amas and hull. I would like to leave the amas out most of the time until I close up for overnight.

Thanks much,

Rob

I hope you are aware that Hobie does not recommend long-term immersion of Islands. Just sayin'.

I don't know anything about docking whips, but there are pad eyes on the bow and stern, about 18 feet apart. There are also pad eyes on the bow and stern of the amas, about 12 feet apart. I use a mini-shackle to attach a more reasonable sized bow shackle to the front pad eye so that I have a convenient place to attach a line.

Thanks much.

I could attach to the main hull instead of the akas to cut down on the leverage to the akas. Do you use fenders to keep the boat away from the dock? Do you collapse the ama to the hull when tied up? I left the akas extended since it was quite a chore to collapse the akas.

I used my whips for over 15 years at 6.5 ' apart with great success in wind and storm conditions. They matched the aka spacing on my T-Gull 23. I attached the whips to the ends of the starboard akas which had substantial tie down areas where the tramps attached. This never caused any failure and held the boat about 3' from the dock.

Anyone else have some thoughts including Hobie? I emailed my dealer, but have not heard back as yet.

Rob, don't know about the whips, but re leaving the kayak in the water for extended periods, Tony is probably right (he is most of the time :P ) about Hobie not recommending.

I have left my TI in brackish water for a couple of weeks without problems, as below.

Rob, while I have no first-hand experience with these whips, here are my random thought.

Dock line connected to midships - pull tight to climb aboard
Whips attached to each crossbar -able to be unattached from the seated position
Dockside ama folded in.

Boarding:-
* Pull midships line in tight, slide over ama
* Undo first whip, Island slides towards second whip
* Undo second whip
* extend ama and sail off.

Just my thoughts....

Thank you all for your thoughts and help.

My TI is to be delivered next week and will give your thoughts some trials.
