Post subject: | Excessive Play in 2015 AI 2 aka Crossbar joints? |
I've searched and the only thread I find on this is the one I started referring to looseness in the aka crossbar joints on the TI I had a few years ago. Here's that link. viewtopic.php?f=71&t=42549&hilit=loose+aka+main+hull+inserts Now I've got about 6 hours of going to windward (4 different outings) in the kind of chop I find in open water (Barnegat Bay, Lake Ontario) in 12-18 knots on my new this summer AI 2. I remain frightened to see the amount of up and down banging around I see in my amas in these conditions. The AI 2 has a lot of windage and I can pedal it directly to windward in these conditions only at about 1.5 to 1.0 knots, so any current and I'm not making headway at all. Sailing it to windward it this boat makes a lot of leaway, and so I end up being concerned about my ability to get where I need to go in a breezy chop unless I just reach back and forth. Not to mention eventual failure of a aka main hull joint (also a concern). I can see the wear showing up on aka insert already (6 hours in chop only). Though most of the motion comes from the fit of this insert into the crossbar, there's some in the rivets happening as well. Here's a video of the aka movement in the starboard after crossbar. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ULEcEEdJyik?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> https://youtu.be/ULEcEEdJyik I suppose I am prepared to epoxy the inserts as well as the riveted joints. But if I epoxy the inserts, I ask myself at what angle of elevation and also what angle of rotation I'm going to epoxy them. The thing is, as the ama rotates backwards to go onto the standard Hobie trailer cradle, first it sags down 8 or 9 inches, and then I lift it up pulling hard to slip it onto the cradle. I suppose I have to favor the fit in the cradle if I epoxy these, as well as lose the ability to pedal or paddle as a monohull. In my previous thread, various people expressed some concerns about excessive play--but things didn't really resolve and that became one of the reasons I sold the TI. I would love it if I had long sweet waves to sail in but I have to deal with bay chop. And it really flings the amas up and down sometimes in a kind of snap roll motion that I cannot believe is good for the joints. Has anybody else dealt with this or had some concerns about it? |
