Post subject:  Bungee chords on Tandem Island amas

First post on this forum. Recently purchased a 2011 TI. I am planing on replacing the bungees on the amas this winter. They are not very stretchy and slightly frayed. The akas have hooks for two bungees but the amas only have one bungee for each aka. Question - can I install an extra bungee? Seems like it would be safer.

Most certainly can. The 2015's came standard with double bungees. You could also add a piece of spectra that would keep the amas from drooping too far if you use them to enter the boat from the water.

Hi. These double bungees can be installed also in 2011 version? How?:

They just thread in. You could retrofit yours or order the ones Matt listed.

Here is how... I doubled up the bungees without needing to add another fitting on the aka on my 2012 Island,

If you do this, you might as well add a loop of dyeema (eg rudder line) as suggested as a belt/braces bullet-proofing, so that even iff the doubled bungees fail, the ama will still not detach from the aka.

Thank you Tony. though i have a single bungee the aka already have a double fittings. In this case i think that the new double bungee is the best solution since the thread is the same as Matt and Tom confirmed.
when was your Island built? before 2011?

Tony, with your setup, don't you still have a single point of failure? If one bungee fails you'll have an awkward pull from the opposite bungee. I could see the aka popping out of the ama with just one bungee left in this setup. Still better than just one bungee though...

No Zach. If only one side remains connected, this provides the same security as the standard Hobie arrangement (the slight reduction in tension still equals the standard amount) and is not really awkward. Not shown is the additional loop of dyeema.

I admit that the single point of failure is the button on the aka, but it is very strong, and the forces on it are lateral.

sorry i Read only now that yours is a 2012 Island and it has only one "button" on the aka?
I wonder why in my 2011 aka there are already 2 buttons on the aka (but of course only one bungee).

Wow, am I glad this topic came up! I am going to add some spectra but falsely thought that the fitting popped out, not that it screwed out. Is there a specific tool to use that will avoid marring the AMA fitting? I'd like to avoid my normal drift/hammer method.

My 2012 TI only has double buttons on two of the akas. The 2015 now has double buttons on all akas.

The 71125501 may be for the newer TI and have a long cord of 13.5" and short cord of 11.5"

For my 2008 AI
Shock Cord Diameter = 1/4
Screw in Fitting - Shock Cord hole opened up with a 5/16 drill
Short cord length = 7 1/4 between fitting tops, cut 8 3/4 of shock cord, hog ring 3/4" from ends
Long cord length = 9 1/4 between fitting tops, cut 10 3/4 of shock cord, hog rings 3/4" from ends

Melt cord ends lightly after cutting, place fitting in a vise with shaped wood grips, put in one cord, use two 1/8" flat screwdrivers to work the second cord in, watch your language and fingers.

A new AI weights as much as an old TI. I can handle and rooftop my 2008 AI. I cannot handle and would not rooftop a new AI or old TI
I roll my old AI across a campground, across a street, up a board walk, and across soft sand on 42cm beech wheels to the beach for setup by myself.

2016 AI Fully Rigged Weight: 185 lbs / 84 kg
2010 AI Fully Rigged Weight: 115 lbs / 52.16 kg
2010 TI Total Rigged Weight= 190lbs. / 86.18kg
