Here's a place to suggest improvements for the AI.

Even if nobody who makes decisions ever reads it - at least it's a place to get it off your chest.... -)

Move the Balance Point for Beach Wheels

Just saw this vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JY96gxoHQA of a guy maneuvering a TI on beach wheels.... one finger to lift the bow.

Score 1 for the TI.

On my AI, it's a significant lift with the beach wheels in place.

Is there some structural reason that the AI's mounting holes cannot be closer to the balance point ?

If not, I would think that moving them would be a worthwhile improvement.

Hobie-Approved Trailer Storage of Fully-Assembled AI

We are all doing our workarounds.

I'm storing the vaka upside-down on the gunwales - per Hobie's recommendation.

Others are using two of the Hobie hull cradles and storing right-side-up - some of those supporting the bow or stern with something when the trailer is not attached to their vehicle.

Others are using home-made bunks.

Everybody seems happy except Hobie - who do not approve of any storage except upside-down-on-the-gunwales. Even Hobie's proprietary cradles are not recommended for longterm storage.

Seems like Hobie needs to engineer a solution or approve one or more existing solutions for yanking the AI out of the water fully-assembled on to a trailer where it can be stored indefinately with no caveats, ifs, ands, or buts....

Edit 2015 12-30 10:35:

I have to withdraw this suggestion in light of HogMan's observation:

+1 to that. The cradles are pretty flimsy as well. Only had mine 1 season and the rear cradle already needs replaced. I'll be engineering some DIY PVC bunks for the TI this spring.

Peter, I am at an utter loss to understand what problem you are fmding... From day 1, I have stored, launched and retrieved my 2012 TI using my trailer. I have a roller about 2 feet from the bow, two Hobie cradles, and another roller about 3 feet from the sterm.

To launch, I set it up ready to sail on the hard (mast up, akas out, all rigging complete), and then simply back it down the ramp until the stern floats, and I then push it off the trailer. Retrieving is the reverse. At home (after hosing off), I push it into the garage ready for the next trip.

Isn't that exactly what you are asking?

BTW, can I gently suggest that as you are the only person here using the word vaka, can I suggest you just call it the main hull? Just sayin'

Read the Hobie lit and you will see that the only Hobie-approved long-term storage is upside-down, resting on the gunwales. That's the heart of what I'm driving at - it's clear that many people have setups that work.... but there needs tb a Hobie-approved setup that works...

Thanks for the real-world experience - especially the part about supplementing the cradles with the two rollers.

I am getting close to doing something - probably bunks at this point....but it will be, as is your solution, technically a kludge by Hobie standards.

Wikipedia defines "kludge" as "a workaround or quick-and-dirty solution that is clumsy, inelegant, inefficient, difficult to extend and hard to maintain."

I would say Tony's launching, loading, and storing his boat does not fit this definition. Quite the opposite, his is elegant, efficient, and easily maintained.

If Hobie is still recommending storing upside down, when there are clearly many other options, it is Hobie who has the "kludge" solution--by definition.

I've kept my TI on my homemade trailer for 4 1/2 years with zero problems. Including the Harbor Freight 4x8 foldable trailer it cost me under $400. Easy to tow, launch and load, only 5'4" wide with Amas attached. I did finally have a tongue welded on which greatly improved towing. Image

Amas are off in this pic to show bunk. Supports hull and amas over 8' of length.

If/when you get a chance, how about a pic of the trailer without the AI on it ? (to show more detail of the bunks).

It's a TI and initially sat too far aft on the trailer. After 4 years I added a steel tongue to move the yak 3-4' forward. Much better towing. I may add another pair of 4x4's 4' forward to give a full 12' of support.

Happy to answer any questions.

My wishes...

1: LIGHTER!! C'mon Hobie, you're leaders in the field. How about investigating alternative moulding technologies? Kevlar, Carbon, Thermoforming... If you could shave 15kg off the total assembled weight that would be marvellous...

2: Make it available in the nice blue colour... :-)

3: Did I say "Lighter"?

Mike.

Can't speak for Mingle, but I would think the issue is around the main hull's weight of 106#.

Seems like Hobie have crossed some sort of line weight-wise when it comes to car-topping and general man-handling by one person.

Agreed that some people seem to be car-topping AI2's... whether by side loaders, T-bar loaders, Hullavators, or brute strength.... and I have done it via side loader, Hullavators, and brute strength. I got it up there each time, but each time it was scary to me.... and I managed to bend the Hullavators in the Hullavator iteration.

OTOH, I dummied up an 80# load for the Hullavators and, once I figured out the right way to do the lift, it went up-and-down with no apparent problems.

If I had to guess, I would say that the root of all this is what the boat is optimized for.

Right here, right now, it seems to me like the AI2 is optimized for fishing.

As a non-fisherman, I'd go for lighter main hull, lower freeboard, narrower main hull.... and a higher K-factor in general.

But that's just me and my own parochial interests..... "Horses for courses", "You pays your money and you takes your choice".... and all that....

Post subject:  Re: Adventure Island Wish List

My TI came with a DVD and it did have somewhat of a fishing theme to it..

I think the name "Adventure" fits these boats well. I use mine to take "water hikes" or "water bike rides". Im always going to some destination and that is what this boat does well. Im not sure I would change a whole lot about it (maybe some details) and hope Hobie doesn't. Pete, I know you used to windsurf and every year the windsurf industry would come out with something that the mags would say was so much better than last years gear. I participated in that for a long time myself but I think that constant changing had an influence on the sport being where it is now (Im sure its still done but I havent seen anyone windsurfing for years and I spend a lot of time on lakes).
