I'm thinking about changing the rear deck cleats to padeyes because I just don't like the serpentine bungee or the cleats and would prefer to just use regular bungee cords that I carry an assortment of and also have some additional leashing points for small items. I was surprised to find that there is an XL version of the screw in padeye. http://www.austinkayak.com/products/872 ... d-Eye.html Has anyone used the larger ones or done this same modification ? I'm assuming they are interchangeable. I like the possibility that a bungee hook and a leash carabiner or chain link could be attached to the same padeye. Chris |

Our 2016 Oasis has the XL pad eyes as standard fittings where the rear deck bungee terminates. I undid one and can confirm they are the same sized thread, so yes they are interchangeable. They have a larger collar on the base. I like their versatility and will be ordering some to replace the front hatch bungee fittings, so as to gain a couple of extra pad eyes forward. This saves me from adding stainless padeyes to the cleats, which is a mod I have done previously:

I done like the cleats on the rear storage and replace them with the screw-in padeyes. If you are going to tether things, so they don't float away in case of a (rare for some people) capsize or other accident, the padeyes are best. In rough seas, bungees will not keep things attached (again if capsized.) Keith |

It appears from the picture that the XL cleat has a hole for bungee cord as well but I'm a little concerned about it not fitting in some locations due to the larger flange. ( EDIT : they do have a bungee hole and the flange is .25" larger in diameter, received my order placed at 5pm last night at 10am this morning already from Austin Kayak ! ) I ordered a couple to take a look at but will probably use the regular size ones primarily. The small ones seem to have plenty of space for regular bungee hooks alongside a small carabiner or chain link for leashes. thanks chris |
