Hi, Im looking at buying a new shape 2015/2016 Tandem Island, my wife and I live on Saltspring Island BC, Canada. We have a 100 lb German Shepherd puppy, does anyone else take a dog this big out with them on their Tandem Islands? will the trampolines take his weight? I could also buy some plastic planking and attach it to the arma's to give him a more solid place to lie down on both sides. Should I just look for a different (bigger) sailing boat/ dingy or would this work with a Tandem Island? He absolutely loves swimming and will have a doggy PFD on when we sail. Thanks for any thought or input Cheers Grif |

Yes! No problem and lots of folks take out their (even larger) dogs. http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/search.php?keywords=dog&terms=all&author=&fid%5B%5D=67&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search Quote: ![]() |

Thanks for the reply Matt, Good to know that bigger dogs are out on the TI's I think the biggest problem we will have is stopping him jumping into the ocean constantly!!! So you have the stock trampolines fitted in the photo? Cheers Grif |

As Matt said, dogs that size are no problem for the TI, However they can be a problem for the crew as it seems the dogs love to jump off the tramps at the most inappropriate time. We constantly laugh at the dogs as they enjoy a day out on the TI. |

I used to have a huge Newfoundland (140# plus) and he would have loved my TI. When we had a yacht, his party trick at the marina was to jump in and swim around every boat in the line (and it was a squeeze sometimes getting through the gaps between boats and marina "fingers". I have no doubt he would have treated the TI as a springboard. |

My Airedale is always up for a ride. I haven't taken him sailing yet, so far he's only gone with while I am pedaling on the river by my house. This weekend I'll try him out sailing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for the replies guys, nice photos Aero, your Airedale looks right at home to the TI! Now I just have to convince my wife that the TI is a good idea! Here is "Gunner", 20 months old, 100 lbs and growing! ![]() |

Hi Grif. About to commit sacrilege here. Matt, the photo of my dalmation is not on a Hobie tramp as you implied. I found the Hobie tramp sagged and the waves kept getting her wet, interfering with her sleep. Maybe I could have tightened the Hobie tramp a little more but I though that was asking for trouble. I ended up making a pvc and wood frame which sits on top of the aka with a tighter mesh system. Not that the Hobie tramps aren't well made but perhaps not ideal for off shore with a larger dog. Our dog loves the water and is always running in from the beach. Sitting alongside of us on the tramp, she doesn't see tempted to jump in at all. Great versatile family craft I'm sure your wife will enjoy. We have friends with two Adventure Islands and he always pedals away, leaving the wife behind. An accident I'm sure ![]() We have ridden tandem bikes where you have to pedal at the same cadence. Not so on the TI but my wife in the front has learnt to sense when I'm note pedalling unfortunately ![]() Good luck with your purchase. |

Hi Brian, Thanks for the information, no problem, its all good, I was thinking that I might make up a more solid frame / mesh like yours anyway as Gunner is still growing! Cheers Grif |

I used 1.5" pvc tube with bends at the corner and inserted timber dowling to give it some stregth, before gluing the elbows. Had a trampolene mesh made to wrap around with cleats stitched in and just tied them across with thin rope to allow me to tighten if the mesh stretches. I hold it on with 1" straps at each corner with Velcro to hold it on. Works well. Cheers, Brian in South Australia. |
