Post subject:  Best Anchor for a TI?
I've been using a typical kayak style 3 pound folding grappler type anchor for my 2015 TI. However even in sand it drifts all over the place on a windy day, even when I set it in as deep as possible. I need to find a better anchor that can hold this 18 foot boat in place better, yet still be able to store it in the rear hatch.

This is not for fishing, it's just to hold the boat in place when resting or relaxing.

What are you using and how effective is it?

Technique has a lot to do with successful anchoring. You need a lot of "scope" in the anchor line. Dropping the anchor straight or mostly straight down isn't going to cut it. On your TI, if you're trying to anchor say, in 10 feet of water, I'd have out at least 30 feet of anchor line and that's really the minimum. Any current or wind and it'll require a lot more.

Having said all this, which you may already know, I would take a look at the Cooper anchors out of Australia. Other than a very rocky bottom where they can't dig in, I've had good success with them.

Multi-hulls are also notorious for sailing at anchor unless you come up with a bridal. Last time I moored my TI I ran the line through the front eyelet around the front aka bar and back to the front eyelet before connecting the line to the mooring ball. The boat did a good job of windvaning after that.

If you search this topic ( cooper anchor ), Tonystott has a nice traveler setup he has documented for anchoring off of the bow. I tend to anchor off of the stern and deploy the anchor off of the rear deck while kneeling in the rear seat then tie a loop when I have deployed enough anchor line, then clip the loop into a carabiner that is on a D shackle that is on the rear cleat where the lift handle is. One reason I do this is because going ashore I want the bow in shallow water so I can get stuff out of the front hatch without treading water at the same time. I have an extra line to run to shore from the bow cleat to keep the boat where I want it away from the rocky shore.

If you get the cooper stuck I have found it helpful to reverse the mirage drive and back over the anchor line while pulling and jiggling the anchor line to dislodge it. There have been a couple of times I thought I might not get it loose but with patience and repetition I always recovered it. We have a lot of submerged cedar stumps in the man made lake where I usually sail.

What diameter rope do you recommend with the Cooper anchor for the TI? And what size chain?

That information is all in the link above. The anchor line could be smaller than 3/8" strength wise but for me the 3/8" is more comfortable to handle with bare hands and doesn't seem to tangle as much. 5/16" might be ok but 3/8" three strand was more commonly available and inexpensive where I looked.

As Buckaroo said, the blue cooper works well. In addition, It will fit through the hatches. For storage, I use a big loop zip tie and stainless spring clip in those little holes in the bottom of the hatches. I make a little larger loop for the rope through the anchor hole so it easily attaches to the stainless spring clip. This allows you to easily find the anchor, and also put the large storage bins in the same hatch.

The bottom line (I crack myself up :lol: )is as follows.

Do not attach any shackles to the Cooper Anchor. Ideally, splice some 3/8th inch three strand line to it (hey, learning how to splice is cool, and very nautical :lol: ).

Have a shackle at the end of that line about 6-10 feet from the anchor.

If you want really good holding power, attach 3-6 feet of 1/4 inch or thicker chain, with as shackle on its loose end.

Attach your anchor line (with loop spliced on to its bottom end) to the chain shackle. The length of this line is up to you, but I would go for at least 50 feet. (if you attach a shackle to its UPPER end, you can add further lines as necessary).

Make sure the upper end of your anchor line is safely attached to your Island (don't laugh, I have seen the results of missing this step!)

As you might have seen elsewhere in this forum, I chose to have a 33 foot line permanently attached to my TI (very handy when launching and retrieving from my trailer) fed through an "O" shaped SS fitting on the bow, with retrieve line. I attach my anchor line to the end of this permanent line.

That should cover it...
