GT (I think.... grey drum, roller bearings in the axle) My limited knowledge of such things tells me that grease is just oil (or some other liquid lube) mixed with a "Soap" to give it the desired consistancy/staying power. If that is the case, what do you think about just squirting some INOX down each side of the axle after each use instead of periodically disassembling it, greasing, and maybe losing one or more of those roller bearings? Seems like a wash lube-wise: grease lasts longer between applications, but if the "oil" can be applied frequently enough the lubrication value sb the same. And flushing with INOX might even hose out the occasional grain of sand... ?? |

We recommend the Hobie Multi-Lube due to lubrication longevity and less impact on the environment. mmiller wrote: HOBIE MULTI-LUBE
A planet-safe lubricant recommended for lubricating MirageDrives and many other uses. Environmentally friendly for in-the-water applications. Hobie Multi-Lube offers excellent lubrication, is an anti corrosive coating, great for cleaning and many other uses... use on nearly anything that squeaks, rusts, corrodes or binds up; MirageDrives, rudder drums, cams, fishing reels and more. The 1 oz size is perfect for getting the lubricant into tight spaces by using the needle applicator. The 4 oz size has a spray applicator for coating chains and larger surfaces, shafts and bulky parts. Every Hobie owner should have Hobie Multi-Lube. Be nice to our planet, keep MirageDrives and other components running smoothly and lasting longer without polluting our waterways. Use it for all shop, home and sport lubrication needs. 5120 HOBIE MULTI LUBE 1 OZ 5121 HOBIE MULTI LUBE 4 OZ ![]() |

Always good to fully -*strip them down occasionally i think, if only to clean out old contaminated grease and and sand that may have got in there. Gives you opportunity to examine for any potential wear. Care does need to be taken reinserting bearings so they dont catch on housing lip and snap when you push shaft back in |

Can you do it without removing the chains?I just replaced the chains and had a helluva time getting them to seat.... must've taken me at least 2 hours until I thought to coax them with a mallet - which I don't imagine is the Hobie Recommended Procedure.... -) |
