Post subject:  Unusual Question about TI Spinnaker Kit

Hi All
I'm sailing my TI in Ireland (I think the only TI in country) and now that Spring is approaching my thoughts are turning to getting back on the water again.

I have a son heading to USA shortly and I was thinking of getting him to bring me home a TI Spinnaker kit when he is in NYC. Much cheaper in States!

My unusual question is .. What size of box does the kit come in and what weight is the kit.

Im thinking would it fit in his suitcase or napsack?

If he removed all packaging, would it take up much room in a typical suitcase and what weight is the kit?

Also I was wondering where in NYC could he purchase?

Many thanks for any help.

Pottsy

Pottsy, I'm in Scotland and if it was an option I'd be happy to 'piggyback' on your idea if that would help with 'excess baggage' etc. as I am also thinking of getting the Spin Kit. Let me know and I'll DM you discuss further... Also have one other mate near me with and AI who could also jump onboard if it helps but not sure if he wants one, the problem we seem to have is 'too much wind' ...

The kit is small. Less than half a suitcase for sure. Biggest items are the mast head and the snuffer (gray). Black bag and spinnaker pack tightly.

Matt many thanks for coming back to me and apologies for very late reply.
My son is flying out this weekend for three month holiday in states before he joins the rat race like the rest of us.
On his way back im going to take a risk and see if he will bring me home a TI 2016 spinnaker kit.
As you say when out of the packaging it should all fit easily in a suitcase but i was hoping you might know the total weight of the kit as this is more likely to be the main issue. Thanks again for any help.

Many thanks for your interest and suggestion.
My concern would be taking a chance on my son getting everything right and home safely. You know what teenagers can be like. Head in clouds.
While i am happy to take a chance on my kit/money i feel it would be too much worry for me to risk someone else's hard earned cash.
Indeed i won't know until last week of his hols if he can arrange to pick anything up.
Sorry for late feedback and once again thanks for interest.
Pity hobie stuff is so expensive on this side of the pond.

No problem Pottsy - I'm still struggling with too much wind as opposed to too little so the spin kit will wait!! I do plan on doing the Caledonian canal in a couple of months though so might regret that! As for getting kit, I too am getting frustrated with the time - even ordering from England, they still have to source from Europe and takes ages. I've bought stuff directly from the States and it comes really quickly sometimes but can get really stung on delivery and tax. Best of luck with teenage son... H

At a guess, I would sat the sail is about the size of a ream of paper, ditto the snuffer, and the masthead fitting about half a ream (but on the short side)and rope the other half. I was quite surprised how compact the kit was when I got it from the dealer. Can't help you with weights though, sorry.

Thats great feedback volume 2 to 3 reams thats not too bad. I guess weight cant be much more than 2kgs or 4or5 lbs.
I must check where in NYC i can get it.
Thanks again. Pottsy

Caledonian canal looks like a good trip. How long is it and how many days do u plan to allow.
Im considering something similar. Erne Shannon waterway canal in Ireland. Though there are quiet a number of locks on some stretchs.

It's 60 miles, with 20 miles of canal and the rest is natural lochs. Yes, quite a few locks too but think that if you are 'powered' (I have an outboard) then they will let you stay in the boat?
