Here's my take on PVC bunks for my Hobie Island, on a Trailex SUT-220-S trailer. The bunks are made from 2" and 1 1/4" gray PVC conduit from Home Depot, with some scraps of 1/2" and 3/4" starboard plastic to attach the tubing to the trailer. Other than that, there's just a few plastic conduit brackets (also from HD) and a few bolts. The total cost was in the range of $30 or so.. It's simple, works great, it supports the hull and amas well, and it's rock solid. I expect it to last a long time.

Very nice work there NM! A very professional looking fitout.  One problem I see though is that those pipe brackets sitting above the conduit are taking most of the weight. I'd be concerned with distortion and also wear when sliding. Would it not be better to fix the top pipes internally? PS: Every time I see an empty mast receiver I shudder, remembering back to the time I found most of the balls in the bottom of the receiver. Since then I've always jammed a short section of pool noodle into the receiver as soon as the mast comes out. |

It seems that the pipes splay out slightly when the kayak is put on the bunks, and the brackets in the middle allow for that small amount of movement (and those brackets don't really support any significant weight). On the ends, they are thru bolted. I'll try to add a closeup picture of that. |
